LAXMIPUR, Nov 9: A jeweller was hacked to death by miscreants in Sadar Upazila of the district on Friday.

The incident took place at Tetultala adjacent to Kazirdighir Bazar of the upazila at night.

The deceased was identified as Hiralal Debnath, 60, son of late Prafulla Debnath of Gobinda Dakter Bari in Hamchhadi area. He was the owner of a gold jewellery shop, named 'Matri Jewellers' at Kazirdighir Par Bazar in Sadar Upazila.

It was known that Hiralal was returning home from his shop at night riding on a bicycle. On the way, three miscreants riding on a motorcycle halted Hiralal at Tetultala and hacked him with indigenous weapons mercilessly, leaving the man seriously injured.

Critically injured Hiralal was then rescued by his son Hiran Lal Debnath, who was also returning home from the shop separately, and rushed to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital, where on-duty doctor Kamla Shish Roy declared him dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

The body bore several injury marks on its different parts.

The deceased's family members claimed that the miscreants looted Tk 2.5 lakh in cash and six to seven bhories of gold from Hiralal at that time.

Additional Superintend of Police (ASP) Hasan Mostafa Swapon confirmed the incident, adding that the law enforcers are investigating the matter.

Meanwhile, Laxmipur SP Rakib Hossain visited the scene on Saturday morning.
