The rickshaw that carried the body of Ghulam Nafiz, a martyr during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, was handed over to the government to preserve at the Ganabhaban-turned-July Uprising Memorial Museum on Thursday.

After receiving the rickshaw, Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md. Nahid Islam said the rickshaw would be preserved in the museum.

The Adviser expressed his gratitude to the rickshaw-puller, Noor Mohammad, for his courage and assured that financial assistance would be provided to him.

The rickshaw, which had become a symbol of Nafiz's sacrifice, was sold by Noor Mohammad to Ahsanul Kabir Siddiqui Kaiser, an expatriate living in London, for Tk 35,000.

Upon learning that Noor had sold the rickshaw, Nahid instructed officials to locate both the rickshaw and its owner.

After finding Noor Mohammad, he revealed that he had sold the rickshaw to Kaiser.

Contacted, Kaiser agreed to donate the rickshaw to the museum, where it will now be displayed as a tribute to Nafiz.

Ghulam Nafiz, a student at Banani Vidyaniketan School and College, was shot and killed on August 4 during anti-government movement.

His bullet-riddled body was placed on the footrest of the rickshaw, where he was still gripping the rod with one hand. The rickshaw-puller rushed him to the hospital, but Nafiz died from his injuries.

This historical piece will now serve as a permanent reminder of Nafiz's sacrifice for justice and equality.
