Is BRICS emerging as alternative to existing global order?

The 16th BRICS Summit took place on 22-24 October in Kazan, Russia with new members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates participating for the first time. As BRICS expands its influence and membership, particularly with the inclusion of more African countries, this summit provides a valuable platform for cooperation on critical issues such as trade, investment, security, peace and development. The summit underscored the importance of a multipolar world where the perspectives and priorities of the Global South are recognized. The Global South led BRICS is growing where 13 new partner nations were accepted. At this historic summit, China's president Xi Jinping referred to BRICS as "a vanguard for advancing global governance reform" and "reform of the global financial architecture"

A significant diplomatic success for Russia, the summit included both members and non-members, totaling over 35 participating states and more than 20 heads of state, including, for the first time, a NATO member, Türkiye, as well as UN Secretary General Antorio Guterres. The summit marks a diplomatic milestone in Russia's effort to break Putin's international isolation and pariah status. Russia's initiatives to use BRICS as a platform to challenge the Western- led global and financial order will continue to face significant obstacles.

The current international landscape exposes significant contradictions in Western foreign policy, especially regarding Taiwan and Palestine. For decades, the West has asserted its support for Taiwan's autonomy as a counterbalance to China. Simultaneously, it has consistently fallen short of advocating as strongly for Palestine's right to sovereignty and self-determination. The recent success of BRICS at its Kazan summit offers a timely opportunity to reevaluate global dynamics, presenting a framework that may help address these imbalances by encouraging multilateral dialogue over unilateral agendas.

The West's stance toward Taiwan and Palestine underscores a selective application of its principles. For Taiwan, the United States and its allies frequently invoke the principle of self-determination, buttressed by large military investments and alliances, such as the Indo-Pacific strategy. This strategy aligns with American and Western interests, reflecting a broader objective to counter Chinese influence in the region. However, this same commitment to autonomy does not extend to Palestine, where rights to sovereignty under international law are systematically undermined or neglected, largely in favor of supporting Israeli policies.

The recently concluded BRICS summit in Kazan, introduced a promising alternative to the existing global order. This summit underscored the importance of economic independence, regional stability, and non-interference in internal affairs, promoting an order that respects each nation's sovereignty and distinct policy choices. By fostering a multipolar balance, BRICS presents a diplomatic pathway that could offer constructive resolutions to conflicts like Taiwan and Palestine without excessive external interference.

BRICS' commitment to expanding cooperation within its member states, including the adoption of de-dollarization practices and collaborative financial mechanisms, empowers countries often marginalized in the current system. This shift toward self-sustaining economic policies reduces dependency on Western financial systems, which have frequently been weaponized through sanctions and economic restrictions. For both Taiwan and Palestine, this approach could allow the freedom to pursue policies without being entangled in the geopolitical aims of the dominant powers.

BRICS' approach is rooted in fostering local alliances that enable countries to address security and economic challenges collectively. In the Kazan discussions, the importance of local partnerships was emphasized, reinforcing BRICS' foundational principle of regional cooperation. In regions like East Asia and the Middle East, where Taiwan and Palestine respectively are situated, this principle is particularly relevant. It demonstrates the potential of multi-country support frameworks as opposed to the bloc-driven, often divisive policies seen under Western influence.

Additionally, by strengthening its alliances, BRICS enables member countries to address the pressures associated with international intervention. In both Taiwan and Palestine, local partnerships within the BRICS framework may provide balanced support for achieving internal stability and diplomatic solutions that prioritize the welfare of the people rather than geopolitical calculations. This approach counters Western narratives by prioritizing the rights and needs of the region over external influence.

BRICS presents a model that redefines the concepts of sovereignty, collaboration, and development in international relations. The principles showcased at the Kazan summit suggest a shift toward inclusivity that could effectively address long-standing conflicts like Taiwan and Palestine. By promoting fair, regional resolutions, BRICS moves away from the single-axis power structures that have historically exacerbated these conflicts.

With the upcoming challenges in the global political sphere, BRICS' role in maintaining stability, economic autonomy, and diplomatic balance will continue to grow. In situations where unilateral influence has dominated, this multipolar platform could pave the way for resolutions that respect the rights of all nations, particularly those who have struggled under the weight of one-sided foreign policy agendas. Through this framework, BRICS exemplifies a vision for a global order where cooperation, not competition, can lead the way to lasting solutions for both Taiwan and Palestine, promoting peace and stability through inclusive diplomacy.

In offering this alternative approach, BRICS solidifies its stance as an advocate for sovereignty and fairness, challenging the established narratives and supporting a world order that is truly multipolar.
