KAMALNAGAR, LAXMIPUR, Nov 8:  Meghna River bank protection embankment in Kamalnagar Upazila of the district has been cut to raise road for carrying blocks by tractor and two temporary jetties in order to load blocks on boat.

This complaint was raised against a contracting firm Western Engineering.

The dam has been risky for cutting its two points by removing blocks.

Locals are apprehending, the dam is likely to collapse anytime.

In 2014 Tk 198 crore was allocated by the government to the Meghna bank protection project ranging from Ramgoti to Kamalnagar.

Under this project, Narayanganj Dockyard Engineering Limited got a work order of constructing half-a-kilometre dam in Matabborhat area in Kamalnagar Upazila at Tk 48 crore.

After two years of the financial allocation, another contracting firm, Western Engineering finished the work in 2016.

At present, under this project, the river bank protection works are going on in different points.

Locals said, along the dam, there  is the Western Engineering's block manufacturing factory in Matabbarhat area. This contracting firm is working in 15 lots of five packages in other areas along the river bank.

Keeping excavator in one jetty, blocks are lifted to boat from tractor.

Local complained, by managing local political leaders and responsible persons of Water Development Board (WDB), Western Engineering is doing these works.

When asked Assistant Director (In-charge)  of Western Engineering Md Borhan said, the works are going on in different areas including Ludhua Falcon and Patarirhat in five packages of the Meghna Bank Protection project; in these areas, dam has been cut for raising road to bring blocks by  tractors; besides, after removing blocks, two temporary jetties have been made.

"We think it will make no harm to the dam. After completion of our work, the dam will be repaired again. Earlier, the dam broke at several points. Then we repaired those for the interest of our factory."

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Suchitra Ranjan Das said, "I am not informed of the dam-cutting. The entire responsibility of the dam belongs to the WDB. They need permission from the WDB for even planting a tree. I will talk with WDB about this matter."

WDB's Executive Engineer-Laxmipur Nahid-uz-Zaman Khan said, he has not been informed of the matter. Yet he gave assurance of taking necessary measures in this regard after inquiry.
