64 detained on different charges in 10 districts

A total of 64 people have been detained on different charges in separate drives in 10 districts - Brahmanbaria, Chapainawabganj, Noakhali, Tangail, Patuakhali, Netrakona, Habiganj, Faridpur, Dhaka and Narayanganj, in recent times. 
  
BRAHMANBARIA: Five women and three young men have been arrested from a flat of the house belonging to an Awami League (AL) leader in the district. 

Police from the Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station (PS) arrested them from a flat and roof of a house owned by District AL's information and research affairs secretary Sheikh Md Anar near Hello Chinese Restaurant, opposite to Government Model Girls High School in the district town on Wednesday night.

The arrested were Farhana Akter, 21, Beauty Khanam, 30, Sima Akter, 24, Abeda Cynthia, 28, Ruma Akter, 19, Shuvo, 26, Rifat, 26 and Ridoy, 21.

Police said that the arrested persons were the inhabitants of Brahmanbaria, Cumilla, Noakhali, Habiganj and Narail districts. They have been conducting flesh trading for a long time. 

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Brahmanbaria Sadar Model PS Md Mozaffar confirmed the matter through a press release on Thursday afternoon.

CHAPAINAWABGANJ: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a thief along with 226 mobile phones and one motorcycle from Rahanpur border area in the district on Wednesday. 

The arrested man is Mohidul, 38, son of late Jillur Rahman, a resident of Kiranganj Village under Shibganj Upazila in the district. 

Acting on a tip-off, a team of BGB conducted a drive in the area and arrested the thief, recovering the stolen phones and motorcycle, said Lt Colonel Md Sadikur Rahman, captain of Naogaon 16-BGB.

The BGB official also said that such drives will continue to prevent all types of smuggling.

NOAKHALI: A total of 41 people were arrested on different charges in separate drives in the district recently. 

Police arrested five people along with various arms, ammunition, and drugs from separate locations in the district recently.

The information was provided by Md Ahsan Habib Polash, additional DIG of the Chattogram range, in a press briefing held at the office of Superintend of Police (SP) in Noakhali.

The arrested individuals are: Badol Hossain, 21; Nd Robin, 28; Md Bahar, 30; Anower Hossain, 26; and Murad Hossain, 22. All of them are residents of different upazilas in the district.

Acting on a tip-off, police set up a checkpoint in front of Sayed Plaza in the Sebarhat area under Senbag Upazila on the Noakhali-Feni regional highway and began searching vehicles. At one stage, police checked a pickup truck and detained three people with 12 kilograms of hemp and 10 firearms.

Later on, police arrested two additional individuals after obtaining information from the arrested trio. They also recovered five foreign pistols, nine magazines, two local LGs, and 277 rounds of ammunition.

On the other hand, at least 36 fishermen have been arrested along with two trawlers, illegal nets, and a large quantity of Hilsa fish from the Meghna River under Hatiya Upazila in the district.

A team from the Coast Guard conducted several operations in various areas of the river. During these operations, the Coast Guard arrested the fishermen and recovered two trawlers, 70 lakh meters of illegal nets, and 400 kg of Hilsa fish.

Later on, the nets were destroyed by being set on fire, and the fish were donated to several institutions in the area.

Earlier, the government banned the catching of Hilsa fish from the river between October 13 and November 3 to protect the mother Hilsa fish.

Lieutenant Sabbir Rahman, media officer of the Hatiya Coast Guard, confirmed the matter.

DHANBARI, TANGAIL: Three people including a member of banned terrorist organization Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) have been arrested over various cases in Dhanbari Upazila of the district. 

Police conducted separate drives in the upazila on Monday night and arrested them from different places in the upazila.

The arrested men are: BCL activist Nur Alam Papon Miah, 36; an accused of a case Uzzal Hossain Nirob, 30; and Shakil Hossain, 26.
The arrested people have been sent to Tangail Jail on Tuesday morning.

Dhanbari PS OC SM Shahidullah confirmed the matter.

PATUAKHALI: Police have unveiled the mystery behind a shocking double murder case in the district and arrested the main accused, who later confessed before the court. 

The breakthrough in the case was announced in a press briefing by the district police.

Deceasaed elderly couple Ashraf Ali Howlader, 77, and his wife Hosne Ara Begum, 70, were murdered in their home in Bahalgachhia area of Patuakhali on July 20. 

The main suspect Mohammad Ali, 32, who lived in the same neighbourhood, has now been apprehended by police after three months.

Additional SP (ASP) in Patuakhali Md Sajedul Islam explained that on the night of July 20 at around 9:30 PM, Mohammad Ali drove his rented electric rickshaw, along with an accomplice, to the elderly couple's residence. 

They allegedly broke into the house carrying a wrench to assist in the crime. During a search of the house for valuables, Hosne Ara Begum became aware of the intruders, prompting them to strike her fatally on the head with a heavy wooden stick. The intruders then arranged her body on the bed.

As the crime unfolded, the woman's husband Ashraf Ali entered the house after unlocking the main gate. Hearing his steps, the attackers hid by the bathroom. When Ashraf Ali discovered his wife's condition and began shouting, Mohammad Ali and his accomplice emerged, assaulting him multiple times with the wrench until he succumbed to his injuries. The suspects then escaped by scaling the wall near a pond on the property.

ASP (Administration) Ahmed Mainul Hasan said that following intense investigations using modern technology and collaboration with the district detective team, the main suspect was apprehended. 

Upon being presented in court, Mohammad Ali admitted his involvement and provided a full statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. 

Police are investigating to determine any potential motives or additional individuals behind the crime, with ongoing efforts to locate and arrest other accomplices involved, the ASP added.

NETRAKONA: A patrolling team of Bangladesh Army detained two persons on charge of impersonating themselves as members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Bangladesh Police from Hamidpur Bazar area in Sadar Upazila of the district recently.

The arrested persons were Al Mamun, 44, son of Abdul Halim Master of Shamganj Village under Mymensingh District, and Khairul Islam, 42, son Jainal Abedin of Charpara Village under the same district.

The army team detained them while they were taking desperate attempt in disguise of DB officers to snatch the valuable things and cash money from a Dhaka bound passengers bus named Saint Martin Paribahan from Netrakona at the Hamidpur Bazar, said second in command of Netrakona army camp Major Zisanul Haider.

The army team also seized two unregistered motor cycles from their possession, he added.

The arrested persons and seized motor bikes were handed over to Netrakona Model PS.

CHUNARUGHAT, HABIGANJ: A man allegedly killed 45-year-old village doctor (kabiraj), whom the accused suspected of causing his father's death, in Chunarughat Upazila of the district recently.

However, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the accused Deepak Bhaumij along with the murder weapon, a sharp machete and took into custody following his confession.

Senior Assistant SP Md Azizur Rahman Sarkar confirmed the details at a press conference.

Earlier, on October 12, Shanicharan Santal alias Ajit's body was discovered in a paddy field in Deundi Tea Garden's Fulchhari Hill area after he was reportedly killed by having his throat slit. 

Ajit's brother Anil Santal subsequently filed a police report, which led to use of technology to track down Deepak, who was arrested with the help of RAB in Madhabpur.

According to the police official, Deepak reportedly harboured resentment toward Ajit, whom he held responsible for his father Nakul Bhaumij's death years earlier. On October 12, as Ajit was returning home from the market, Deepak confronted him. 

Following an argument, Deepak attacked and fatally hacked Ajit to death, leaving his body in a nearby field.

The press conference was attended by Chunarughat PS OC Mohammad Nazrul Islam and Investigating Officer Liton Roy.

FARIDPUR: Members of RAB, in a drive, arrested two women robbers from the district and seized gold ornaments and cash money from them recently.

The arrested women are: Kohinur Begum, wife of Abdul Aziz, hails from Pirojpur District, and Sharina Sultana, wife of Abdul Zalil, hails from Barguna District.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted an operation in Bhanga area of the district and nabbed the women from a residence, according to RAB sources.

The elite force also seized 49 pieces of gold nose pin, five mobile phones and Tk 1.33 lakh cash from their possession, the RAB sources added.

The arrested were, later, handed over to Daulatpur PS in Khulna.

SAVAR, DHAKA: Four people were detained on different charges in separate drives in Savar Upazila of the district recently. 

Police have arrested three suspects in connection with the killing of a trader in Savar, who was fatally stabbed during a robbery on November 29.

Among the arrested, a suspect has confessed to the crime during preliminary questioning, confirmed ASP (Crime and Ops) Md Jashim Uddin at a press conference held at Savar Model PS.

The arrested are Md Iman, 16, son of Fazel Sarkar of Pabna, Rakibul Hasan Rakib, 20, son of Jahangir of Bhola, and Ali Hossain, 19, son of Rokon Uddin of Kishoreganj. 

They are reportedly professional members of a robbery gang operating in Savar's Dilkhushabagh, Bonpukur, and nearby areas.

According to police, the deceased Arshaduzzaman, 44, a vegetable trader, was attacked on November 29, shortly after arriving in Savar from Rangpur early in the morning. The assailants stabbed him and snatched Tk 700 and a mobile phone. 

Locals found the severely injured trader and rushed him to Enam Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead by the attending doctor.

Following a case filed by the deceased's nephew Jahangir Alam, under the directives of the District SP, the police tracked down the suspects within 72 hours. 

Later on, one of the suspects Iman has admitted to his involvement in the murder and was sent to court to provide a statement under Section 164. The remaining suspects were also produced before the court. 

Police have confirmed that all three are linked to the murder and robbery. Further investigation is underway to identify additional suspects if any are involved, the police official added.

Meanwhile, a motor mechanic was stabbed to death reportedly by a local teen gang member over a minor altercation in Savar's ward No. 4 recently.

The incident took place in Jelepara area of the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Sushil Rajbangshi, 45, a resident of the area, while the arrested suspect identified as Ganesh Rajbangshi, a known member of a local youth gang.

According to local authorities, the incident took place in Jelepara neighbourhood of Savar Municipality when the deceased was having tea at a nearby stall. At that time, Ganesh was seen roaming the area with a knife in drunken state. 

When Sushil admonished Ganesh, an argument broke out. The confrontation escalated, resulting in Ganesh allegedly stabbing Sushil multiple times before fleeing the scene.

Local residents rushed Sushil to Savar Enam Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the attending doctor.

ASP (Crime and Ops) Md. Jasim Uddin confirmed that police from Savar Model PS quickly responded to the scene and apprehended Ganesh. 

During preliminary questioning, Ganesh reportedly admitted to the stabbing. A murder case has been filed, and he is scheduled to appear in court for a 164 statement confession.

NARAYANGANJ: Members of RAB-11, in a drive, arrested a fugitive criminal, who was sentenced to life-term imprisonment in connection with the killing of madrasa student Mahabub in Araihazar Upazila, from the Chattogram road of Siddhirganj in the district recently. 

The arrested man is Saikat, 23, son of Md Billal, a resident of Sendipara area under Araihazar Upazila. 

RAB-11 Media Officer ASP Sanad Barua confirmed the matter in a press release. 

According to the press release, police recovered the body of Mahabub, a student of Bandar Quami Madrasa and son of Ashkar Ali of Sendi Village under Haijadi Union in Araihazar Upazila, from a paddy field at the night of May 17, 2020. 

The deceased's elder brother Abu Hanif, being the plaintiff, lodged a murder case with Araihazar PS in this regard. 

Police then came to know that Saikat, Md Kawsar and Shamim stabbed Mahabub to death over a scuffle following a card game. 

On July 31, 2024, Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge SM Ershadul Alam sentenced the three accused to life-term imprisonment.

Police arrested Kawsar, but the other two went into hiding.

Later on, the RAB-11 arrested Saikat from the Chattogram road of Siddhirganj recently, the press release added.
