Sohel gets success in lemon farming

NARAIL, Nov 8: Md Sohel Sikder of Machimdia Village in Narail Sadar Upazila has achieved his success by cultivating lemon along with study.

Firstly, he started to think about doing something along with his academic study. He bought thousands of lemon saplings from Meherpur and started the lemon cultivation on leased land. 

While talking with this correspondent of The Daily Observer, Sohel said, after the first six months of fertilising and tending, lemons started to appear.

China-5 and Chinese saplings of two varieties of lemon have been  cultivated on two acres of land. 

He is selling about 1,000 to 1,500 lemons per day. He is earning about Tk 5 to 7 lakh yearly from his lemon orchard. His  investment was only Tk 3 lakh. 

Seeing his success,  other youngsters are also becoming interested in  lemon cultivation.

His lemons are selling in wholesale market at the rate of Tk 2 and 2.5 per piece. But in other seasons per wholesale rate is Tk 5 to 8.

Besides, he receives lemon order from different places in the country including Chattogram. 

Md Roknuzzaman, Narial Sadar upazila agriculture officer, said, Sohel Sikdar is a unique example of small and big entrepreneurs in Narail Sadar and surrounding areas.

He gave assurance of all cooperation to young entrepreneurs to cultivate lemons commercially around houses or in fields.
