BNP has submitted a list of five names for forming the new Election Commission to the Search Committee.
On Wednesday, BNP's Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed and Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anny presented the list to Cabinet Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid.
However, BNP did not disclose the names it submitted to the Search Committee.
BNP's media wing member Shairul Kabir Khan said, "A two-member delegation from BNP delivered a confidential letter from Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to the cabinet secretary at the Secretariat."
The interim government formed the search committee on Oct 31 to recommend candidates for the chief election commissioner, or CEC, and other commissioners, requesting political parties, professional organisations, and individuals to submit a maximum of five proposed names.
Proposed names must be submitted along with a comprehensive curriculum vitae, either directly to the Cabinet Division or via email (
[email protected]) by 5pm on Nov 7.
BNP submitted its list of five names to the Search Committee a day before the deadline.
The six-member committee under the leadership of Appellate Division Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury also includes High Court Justice AKM Asaduzzaman, Auditor General and Comptroller Md Nurul Islam, Bangladesh Public Service Commission Chairman Prof Mobasser Monem, former Dhaka University Department of International Relations professor Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, and former Bangladesh Public Service Commission chairman Zinnatun Nessa Tahmida Begum.
The Kazi Habibul Awal commission, which oversaw the 12th parliamentary election on Jan 7, concluded its tenure on Sept 5, about a month after a political transition.
The interim government, led by Dr Muhammad Yunus, has already initiated reforms in various sectors.
The 13th parliamentary election will take place under the new EC once these reforms are completed.
The interim government has said the timeline for the elections depends on the "minimum consensus" of political parties.
