Police arrested a Union Parishad chairman on Thursday in a case filed over the murder of vegetable seller Sajjad Hossain during the recent mass uprising in Gangachara Upazila of Rangpur.
The arrestee was Mazharul Islam Lebu, a chairman of Gangachara Union Parishad and local Awami League (AL) leader.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gangachara Model Police Station Mohammad Al Imran said a police team arrested Mazharul from the Gangachara Sadar Union Parishad premises on Thursday.
He is an accused in the murder case of vegetable vendor Sajjad Hossain, who was shot dead during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on July 19 in the city.
Sajjad's wife Jitu Begum filed a murder case accusing 51 named, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 300 unnamed people, on August 20, the OC said.
Other accused in the case include - former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu, Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon, Journalist Subhash Singh Roy, former prime minister's press secretary Nayeemul Islam Khan, former state minister Mohammad A Arafat, and Awami League leader Apu Ukil.
