A BNP leader was arrested by joint forces along with a foreign pistol in Patuakhali's Mirzaganj Upazila on Thursday.
The arrested Jahangir Faraji is the General Secretary of Mirzaganj Upazila BNP.
Acting on a tip-off, joint forces raided the leader's residence in Subidkhali area early in the morning and arrested him. At that time, a foreign pistol, magazine and two rounds of bullets were recovered from two separate rooms at his house.
Mirzaganj Army Camp Commander Captain Rimon Rafin Nishat confirmed the information.
Captain Rimon Rafin said the seized pistols and ammunition were American-made. The arrested person and weapon have been handed over to police station. Preparations are underway to file a case in the incident. The operation was carried out to prevent illegal use of firearms and to maintain national security.
Bangladesh Army will continue such operations to maintain public security and combat illegal activities involving firearms, he said.
