Students of seven colleges affiliated to Dhaka University (DU) postponed their movement on Wednesday following assurance from the Education Adviser that the colleges will be given a 'distinct identity' by decoupling from the DU.
A statement sent to reporters by the protesters on Wednesday, however, threaten tougher movement if the Adviser's assurance was not materialised.
Students of the seven colleges have long been demanding separation from the DU and a separate university for the institutions.
However, the statement said a delegation of the protesters met Education Adviser Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud on Tuesday.
"He realised the rationale of our demand and assured entitling a distinct identity for the seven college students," said the statement.
It added, "The Adviser assured us that affiliation with the DU will be cancelled … A new identity will be created for seven college students. But the process to create this identity will be determined by the committee formed by the Education Ministry and an expert team. He sought time and our cooperation. During the period he will visit all the campuses of seven colleges. He also assured inclusion of student representatives to the committees formed by the Education Ministry."
"We are satisfied with the assurance of the Education Adviser. Therefore, we have decided to temporarily suspend our ongoing agitation programme," read the statement.
