To stabilize egg prices and ensure smooth supply, the Directorate of National Consumers' Right Protection (DNCRP) in Bangladesh has launched a new initiative, directly supplying eggs from producers to dealers at 13 designated locations across Dhaka's north and south city corporations.
The new measure, set to start within the next three days and will run as a two-week pilot program, aims to reduce middlemen, thereby keeping egg prices reasonable for consumers, according to Director General Mohammad Alim Akhtar Khan.
The announcement was made on Wednesday during a press conference held at TCB Building in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka.
Prior to this, the department held consultations with egg producers, wholesalers, retailers, market committees, and relevant trade associations. The goal was to streamline egg distribution in major Dhaka markets and curb price hikes. Following these discussions, the implementation plan was shared in the press conference.
The designated locations include Tejgaon Market, Mirpur-1, Mirpur-10, Mohammadpur Krishi Market, Sadek Khan Krishi Market (Mohammadpur), and Uttara-10 in Dhaka North, as well as Kaptan Bazar, New Market, Khilgaon, Jurain, Konapara Sarulia, Shanir Akhra, and Chattogram Road in Dhaka South.
Each day, 20 lakh eggs will be supplied directly from producers to dealers for consumers, managed by the two city corporations. The distribution includes 6, 50,000 eggs each at Tejgaon and Kaptan Bazar, and 7, 00,000 eggs split among the remaining markets.
For seamless operations, city corporation authorities have been informed about parking and loading facilities at these markets. Additionally, the Department is working with the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock to draft a storage policy for surplus eggs, expected to be ready within a week.
When asked about the country's current egg demand, Alim Akhtar Khan noted that the daily demand exceeds 4.5 crore eggs, with a small portion imported. However, producers indicated that under normal conditions, domestic supply could meet demand. The government has approved egg imports as a temporary solution, but the ministry's long-term goal is to fully meet demand from domestic production.
The press conference was also attended by key officials, including Director (Administration and Finance) Abdul Jalil, Director (Operations and Laboratory Division) Fakir Muhammad Munawar Hossain, Deputy Director (Operations) Atiya Sultana, and Deputy Director (Training and Promotion) Afroza Rahman.
