Mongla Port to be upgraded to international standards: Shipping Adviser

KHULNA, Nov 6: Adviser of Shipping Ministry Brigadier General (Rtd) Dr M Sakhawat Hussain said on Wednesday that the Mongla port will be upgraded to international standards, modern and smart.

"The government has taken some projects for the development of Mongla Port, side by side its ongoing projects for building the port international standards," he made the remarks while addressing a meeting with the Mongla Port high officials in the conference room of Mongla Port Authority (MPA) as the chief guest on Wednesday morning.

Chairman of MPA Rear Admiral Shaheen Rahman presided over the meeting.

Sakhawat, also the Textile and Jute Adviser, said that the government might sign a deed after considering G2G project financed by the China for the development of the port. Necessary establishments including two container births, yard will be built under the project. 

The port would be very important one for South Asian connectivity after completion of the project, he said. 
 
Terming the Mongla Port is very important considering its geographical location, the Adviser urged Nepal and Bhutan to use the sea port for their greater interest.

The chief guest said that the port is playing an important role in the country's economy. Besides, the port has rail and seawater vessel connections with Dhaka and parts of the country, so there is no chance of delaying this port, he added.

A PowerPoint presentation about dredging activities, ongoing development projects, cargo containers, car imports, annual financial report and present activities of the port has been screened at the meeting. 

Members, Director (Administration), Head of different departments and high officials of the MPA, among others, attended the meeting.

Later on, the Adviser visited different spots of Pashur Chanel, the Vessel Traffic Monitoring and Information System (VTMIS), waste management and the permanent jetty area of the port.

Replying questions by journalists, Sakhawat Hussain, said government is working to reopen closed jute mills through private leasing. Former labourers of the closed jute mills will have priority in getting jobs after reopening of the mills.
