Man murdered on the way to mosque in Gopalganj

GOPALGANJ, Nov 6: An elderly man was hacked to death by assailants on his way to a local mosque for performing Fajr prayers in Kashiani Upazila of the district on Tuesday.

The incident took place in Rajpat Village of the upazila at dawn.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Kuddus Sheikh, 65, son of late Hashem Sheikh of the area. He worked as a painter. 

According to his daughter Nilufa Begum, her father had a daily routine of going to mosque for Fajr prayers. On Tuesday as he made his way to Rajpat Dakshinpara Markaz Mosque, the assailants ambushed him near Kamal Sheikh's pond, attacking him indiscriminately and leaving him in the water before fleeing the scene. 

Hearing his scream, locals then rescued him and took to Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared  Abdul Kuddus dead.

However, police recovered a knife, a jacket, and two pairs of shoes from the scene.

Officer-in-Charge of Kashiani Police Station Md Shafiuddin Khan confirmed the incident, adding that filing of a case is underway in this regard and the law enforcers are investigating the motive behind the murder and arrest those involved.
