The Chief Adviser's (CA) press wing has refuted a recent report by Bengali daily 'Prothom Alo', which claimed a significant rise in murders and crime in Dhaka during September and October.
In a statement posted on the verified Facebook page 'CA Press Wing Facts,' the press wing described the report as 'dangerously flawed' and lacking accurate fact-checking.
According to Prothom Alo, 192 people were allegedly killed in Dhaka over the past two months, with 21 murders specifically in Mohammadpur. However, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) clarified that the actual number of deaths was 68 city-wide and 10 in Mohammadpur, considerably lower than reported.
The DMP explained that some of these cases pertain to murders from the mass student-led uprising in July and August, which were only filed in September and October. This delay, the DMP noted, may have led to confusion in reporting.
While Prothom Alo did publish a rejoinder from the DMP, it did not update the original report to reflect the revised figures, which, according to the CA press wing, has misled the public regarding Dhaka's law and order situation.
The government and police authorities remain committed to upholding public safety across the country, including Dhaka, the statement emphasized, and called upon Prothom Alo to correct the report in accordance with the DMP’s clarification.
