Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan has been asked to undergo an analysis of his bowling action by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) following concerns raised by umpires during his one-off appearance for Surrey in the County Championship this season.
Shakib, 37, took nine wickets in a thrilling match for Surrey against Somerset at Taunton in September. The left-arm spinner was brought in on a short-term deal to reinforce Surrey's bowling lineup as the team pushed for their third consecutive Championship title. Shakib's appearance came during a period when eight of Surrey's players were on international duty, including their primary spinners Will Jacks and Dan Lawrence.
Despite Shakib's impact on the game, Surrey ultimately lost to Somerset by 111 runs, a result that temporarily delayed their title chase. Although Shakib bowled over 63 overs without being no-balled for throwing, it was revealed that on-field umpires Steve O'Shaughnessy and David Millns reported his action as suspect after the match.
This marks the first time in Shakib's 20-year career that his bowling action has come under review. He has claimed 712 wickets across 447 international matches, including 246 in 71 Tests.
Shakib is not suspended from playing, but discussions are ongoing to arrange further testing of his action, which is expected to take place in an approved testing location within the coming weeks.
His international career is currently uncertain following his withdrawal from Bangladesh's Test squad against South Africa last month over security concerns. This decision came amid nationwide protests, which led to the ousting of the Awami League-led government, for which Shakib previously served as an MP.
