Increasing women's participation in nation-building activities is essential for their empowerment in the process of building a youth-driven prosperous, discrimination-free and accountable Bangladesh.

The opinion came on Tuesday at a women's rally organized by the District Information Office (DIO) at Ruposhi Munshipara village in Khoragachh union of Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur district.

Director of the DIO Dr Md Mofakkharul Iqbal attended the event as the chief guest with its Assistant Director Md Alamgir Kabir in the chair.

Assistant Teacher of Nurpur Girls' High School in Mithapukur upazila Md Rafiul Islam addressed the rally as a special guest.

Moderated by Assistant Information Officer of the DIO Tania Taznin Memi, 140 female students, working women, housewives and female entrepreneurs participated in the rally.

In his welcome speech, Alamgir Kabir said the nation is going to build an equity-based society free from all forms of discrimination and exploitation to ensure equal rights of all citizens.

"To attain this goal, both men and women should equally come forward," he said.

The chief guest said that equality between men and women along with improvement of the quality of life of women is one of the components of creating a discrimination-free country.

"Men and women are the two wheels of the society, without one of which it is not possible to move forward. So, there is no alternative to proper education and employment to make women self-reliant for overall development," he said.

He said, "Family is the first school of children, mother is the first teacher. Family education is crucial in building a bright future for children. The role of the family in imparting moral education to children is essential.

Regarding child marriage, he said, child marriage is a curse and a big obstacle in the way of progress of the society.

"To free society from this curse, everyone should be vocal in preventing child marriage. Any child marriage incident should be reported to the administration immediately," he said.
