Separate courts on Sunday sentenced two people to death and seven others to life-term imprisonment in different murder cases in two districts - Rangpur and Sylhet.
RANGPUR: A court in the district on Sunday sentenced two individuals to death and another to rigorous life-term imprisonment in connection with a double murder in Pirganj Upazila in 2018.
Rangpur Senior District and Sessions Judge Fazle Khoda Md Nazir handed down the verdict in the afternoon in the presence of the convicts.
The condemned convicts, who were awarded death sentence, are: Abdur Rashid alias Nannu Mondal and Harun Mondal.
The lifer is Akmal Hossain, 40.
Public Prosecutor of the court Aftab Uddin confirmed the matter.
According to the prosecution, the murders stemmed from a land dispute in Mojila Taherpur area under Pirganj Upazila of the district, where Rafiqul Islam, 45, and Abdur Razzak Mondal, 40, were killed on July 18, 2018, following a violent altercation.
A murder case was filed with Pirganj Police Station (PS) the next day in this regard.
After a detailed investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court naming three accused.
Following the witness testimonies and the substantial evidences, the judge found the defendants guilty beyond any reasonable doubt and pronounced the verdict on Sunday afternoon.
"We have achieved justice," expressing satisfaction said PP of the court Aftab Uddin. "Anyone who commits a crime must face consequences," the PP added.
Meanwhile, the defence attorney has announced plans to appeal the decision in a higher court.
SYLHET: Six individuals were sentenced to life-term imprisonment for killing a young man in Balaganj Upazila of the district in 2006.
The verdict was delivered by Judge Shayla Sharmin of Sylhet Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-4 on Sunday.
Additionally, one accused received a one-year sentence, while five others were acquitted due to lack of evidence.
The six convicts, who received life-term jail, were also fined Tk 50,000 each, with an additional year of rigorous imprisonment if unpaid.
The individual with a one-year sentence was fined Tk 5,000, with an additional three months' jail in default of the payment.
The case dates back to May 12 in 2006, when Fakhrul Islam, 35, was attacked by the accused due to personal enmities and pending legal disputes while he was on his way to perform Jumma prayers.
The attackers reportedly ambushed him near Khayshapara Madrasa in Balaganj Upazila of the district, injuring him fatally with locally made weapons. Fakhrul's brother and sister, who attempted to intervene, were also severely injured in the attack.
Although locals transported the injured to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, the on-duty doctor declared Fakhrul dead upon arrival.
In this regard, Fakhrul's brother Sirajul Islam filed a murder case against 14 individuals with Balaganj PS being the plaintiff.
After a lengthy investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court against 14 accused in July, 2006.
The court proceedings began in 2008, with 21 witnesses testifying in the case.
Additional PP of the court Advocate Jalal Uddin fought the case on behalf of the state while Advocate Golam Ehya Chowdhury Suhel defended the accused.
