RAJSHAHI, Nov 4: The government has appointed Afia Akhter as the first ever woman deputy commissioner (DC) in the district.
On Saturday evening, Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Dr Dewan Muhammad Humayun Kabir congratulated the district's first woman DC Afia Akhter in his office.
She joined as the 127th DC and District Executive Magistrate of Rajshahi on Sunday.
On October 30, in the notification of the Field Administration-2 Branch of the Ministry of Public Administration, Chattogram Zonal Settlement Officer Afia Akhter has been posted as the DC here.
After 254 years of formation of the district, this is the first time a woman has been appointed as a DC. When the district was formed on 16 December 1769, Mr CW Boughton Rouse was appointed as the first DC in Rajshahi.
After that, no woman was appointed among the 126 DCs of the district in 254 years. According to the information, Afia Akhter has joined the district as the first woman DC.
Afia Akhter was born in Jashore District. She passed SSC in 1993 from Jashore Government Girls High School. She passed HSC in 1995 and got admission in International Relations Department at Dhaka University.
There she obtained honours in 1998 and master's degree in 1999. After joining the admin cadre through 25th BCS, her first workplace was the Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner's office.
