TANGAIL, Nov 4: Farmers in the district are passing busy time in cultivating winter vegetables with the hope of recovering their damages from rain and flood.

According to sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE)-Tangail, the local agriculture office is inspiring farmers to get bumper yielding with necessary advice and assistance.

According to sources at the DAE, the winter vegetables are being hugely cultivated in char-hill-plain areas in Tangail as its land formation is much fertile, drenched by the Jamuna, Dhaleashwari and Louhajong rivers; and after meeting the district's demand, vegetables are also sent to other districts.

This season the target of the winter vegetable farming has been fixed on 11,000 hectares (ha) of land; all types of assistance are made to growers; yet, vegetable  seeds and saplings were damaged by floods and excessive rainfall in summer.

Due to that setback, vegetable prices have increased in markets suddenly.

A visit found farmers preparing lands and sowing seeds in different fields.

While talking with this correspondent of The Daily Observer, growers of Galar Char in Sadar Upazila Badsha, Hasmot, Rana Islam, Amir Hamza and others said, compared to other  crops, the winter vegetable cultivation is increasing; once there would be paddy farming hugely; now in these lands, vegetables are being cultivated.

A grower of Beguntal Village at Hugra Union Mafiz Uddin said, winter vegetables give higher profit than other crops. That is why he cultivates winter vegetables every year. The demand of winter vegetable is higher in markets.

Growers Sharif Ahmed, Abdul Hamid, Azizur Rahman and many others of Kalihati Upazila said, along with arrival of their vegetables in markets, the vegetable prices will come down; the supply crisis will decrease; and like previous years, they will be benefitted this year too.

Senior Officer of the Agricultural Marketing Department-Tangail Farzana Khan said, the district is well known for all types of vegetable; so, vegetables are cultivated hugely.

Growers are showing interests of winter vegetable farming every year, she added.

She further said, after meeting the local demand, surplus vegetables are sent to Dhaka, Rajshahi and other districts of the country.

DAE's Training Officer Md Dulal Uddin said, if the weather goes fair, there will be bumper yielding of vegetables in the district.

With the arrival of the winter vegetables, the vegetable crisis will be solved while the prices will fall, the official added.
