Around 8.5 million cubic feet of gas is being fed to Bangladesh National grid daily from Sylhet-7 gas well in Jaintapur Upazila's Haripur area, starting from Monday (November 4).
Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL) authorities confirmed the development, saying, "There are reserves of 94 billion cubic feet of gas in Sylhet-7 gas well which can be lifted for 15 to 20 years. The connection to the national transmission line was made on Monday on a trial basis which will supply 8.5 million cubic feet of gas per day from the well."
SGFL Managing Director Md. Mizanur Rahman said, "On Monday, an additional 8.5 million cubic feet of gas from well-7 is being supplied to the national grid on a test basis."
Exploration at Sylhet-7 well has been ongoing since July. On October 14, at a depth of 2,010 meters, around 7 million cubic feet of gas was discovered, followed by an additional 8.5 million cubic feet found at a depth of 1,200 meters on October 22. After a week of test production, the well was prepared for continuous supply to the national grid.
Originally discovered in 1986, the Haripur Sylhet-7 well initially served as an oil well until 1994. Since then, the focus shifted to natural gas extraction.
Nationally, 14 wells in Sylhet are managed by Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration & Production Company Limited (BAPEX), including multiple wells in Haripur, Kailashtila, Rashidpur, and Beanibazar fields.
