Transport for London (TfL) is set to support Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) in refining Dhaka's traffic management, according to DNCC Administrator Md. Mahmudul Hasan.
The announcement came after a meeting with British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Sarah Cooke, at the DNCC office in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Monday.
TfL's support will focus on network management, bus operations, and traffic safety improvements. Initially, the initiative will be piloted between Gulshan-1 and Gulshan-2. A delegation from TfL previously assessed traffic conditions in Gulshan in July, paving the way for this collaboration.
Md. Mahmudul Hasan expressed that leveraging London's experience in bus franchise models and traffic signal systems could be transformative for Dhaka. "Based on the results from the Gulshan pilot project, we aim to develop a broader plan to modernize Dhaka’s entire transport system," he stated, emphasizing collaboration with stakeholders for sustainable improvements.
Last November, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the DNCC and the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to focus on modernizing Dhaka’s transport system and alleviating traffic congestion. Key DNCC officials, including CEO Mir Khairul Alam, Chief Engineer Brig. Gen. Mohammad Moin Uddin, and Additional Chief Engineer Mohammad Arifur Rahman, attended the meeting.
