An elderly former Awami League leader was and sent to jail on Sunday in a case filed for allegedly raping a six-year-old girl at Gurudaspur upazila in Natore on Saturday.
The incident took place on Saturday at Khamarnazkoir area in Gurudaspur municipality.
The victim's father Sayedul Islam filed the rape case with Gurudaspur Police Station on Saturday night accusing Gafur Molla, 70, of the same area.
Officer-in-charge of the police station, Golam Sarwar Hossain, confirmed the arrest and detention of Gafur Molla, who had previously served as the president of Ward No. 3 Awami League unit in the municipality.
The child was admitted to Gurudaspur Upazila Health Complex on Saturday afternoon, where gynecologist Dr. Sharmin Sathi reported severe injuries, including a torn cervix and heavy bleeding.
Police arrested accused Gafur Molla from his house on the same night. When produced before a magistrate on Sunday, the court sent him to jail, said the OC.
The victim's mother Shapla Khatun told that she demands capital punishment for the alleged rapist.
Sayedul Islam said Gafur Molla is an influential person in the area and was offering the family hush money to not file a case against him.
The father said he even threatened the family after they refused his offer.
