Speakers at the Second South Asian Conference on Climate Change on Saturday claimed that due to the impact of climate change Bangladesh has been facing various problems.
As a result, many people have been facing difficulty in growing food grains due to excessive rain and floods while many other people are facing trouble due to shortage of rain caused due to climate change. The quality of drinking water has deteriorated creating health risks for the people, they said emphasizing on reducing the risks of disaster and damages considering the aspects of the next century.
Centre for People and Environment (CPE), an organization working on climate change issues, organized the two-day event at the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) in Dhaka. CPE Director Mohammad Abdur Rahman Rana presided over the function.
Among others, Professor of Environment Science on Toronto University in Canada Prof Dr Monirul Kader Mirza, agronomist Dr Jagat Chand Malakar, Indian climate expert Dr Shiladutta Chatterjee and Tripura University Assistant Professor Dr Jayanto Chowdhury also spoke at the programme.
Dr Monirul Mirza said almost all projects in South Asian region are vulnerable to weather issues. None of the countries is out of risk, according to the research of the World Bank. "We don't know what will happen 75 or 100 years later. So, we are keeping this in mind for consideration."
