Ami Probashi, a Bangladeshi digital platform designed to promote transparency, reduce migration costs, and to speed up it, has published its half-yearly report for January to June 2024 finds Saudi Arabia the most preferred destination Bangladeshi for workers.

It analyses 10 top jobs for Bangladeshi migrants out of a population of 13000 to show a significantly growing demands for skilled Bangladeshi workers abroad.
The figures mainly show a positive shift from unskilled to skilled category workers
The first six months of the 2024 alone witnessed a robust migration, with over half a million workers flying abroad for employment and about 250,000 chose Saudi Arabia as their preferred destination between January and June period.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has become the country of choice for most migrant populations, the website platform said pointing out that employers mainly focus on skilled and unskilled workers for infrastructure development.

Malaysia ranks the second best destination with almost 93,000 migrants workers flying to that country in the same period. Qatar wraps up the top 3rd position with 39,517 migrants flying into that country in this period.

Ami Probashi's report also highlights the category of work. Almost 80 percent migrant workers or 150,000 workers fall into the 'general' skill type, which includes a mix of skilled and unskilled work. Construction work ranks second with 63,469 migrants and factory work rounds up the top 3 list with 33,748 migrants

The first half report shows about 10.4 percent of the total migrants are skilled with 3.2 percent being professionals in industry-specific roles such as software developers.

The remaining 7 percent are unskilled migrants. This shift in the workforce from unskilled to skilled migration is a positive development for Bangladesh.

Though the number of migrant workers keeps rising every year, women's participation in this workforce stays marginal, making up only 6 percent of the total workforce in this six-month period and most are houseleeks.
