Road mishaps claim 9 lives in eight dists

Nine people have been killed and at least 11 others injured in separate road accidents in eight districts - Kishoreganj, Chapainawabganj, Lalmonirhat, Natore, Gazipur, Rajshahi, Patuakhali and Barishal, in recent times. 
  
KISHOREGANJ: Two teenage boys were killed when their motorcycle hit a roadside tree after losing its control over the steering in Pakundia Upazila of the district on Sunday noon. 

The accident took place in Mothkhola Natun Bazar area of the upazila at around 12 pm. 

The deceased were identified as Polash, 17, son of Kamal, and Ryad, 18, son of Asad. Both of them were residents of Charkhama area under Egaroshindur Union in the upazila.

Police and local sources said that the two teenage friends were riding a motorcycle at noon. At around 12 pm, the driver of the motorcycle lost control over the steering of it while overtaking an auto-rickshaw in Mothkhola Natun Bazar area of the upazila. At that time, the motorcycle hit a roadside tree, which left the duo dead on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies of the deceased from the scene. 

Local Female Union Parishad (UP) Member Shirin Aktar confirmed the incident.

GOMASTAPUR, CHAPAINAWABGANJ: A local singer was killed and two others were injured in a road accident in Gomastapur Upazila of the district on Saturday night.

The accident took place in front of Freedom Fighter Joynal Abedin CNG Station on the Rohonpur-Adda regional highway of the upazila at around 9 pm. 

The deceased was identified as Abdul Hannan, 45, son of Entaz Ali, a resident of Gouripur Village under Boalia Union in the upazila. He was known as a singer in the area.

It was known that Hannan lost control over the steering of his motorcycle and hit a bicycle carrying a couple in front of Freedom Fighter Joynal Abedin CNG Station on the Rohonpur-Adda regional highway at night, which left three people critically injured.

Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene and took the injured to Gomastapur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctors declared Hannan dead. 

Being informed, police recovered the body.

PATGRAM, LALMONIRHAT: A sportsman was killed and at least four others were injured in a road accident in Patgram Upazila of the district on Saturday afternoon.

The accident took place in Dharala Bridge Nander Ghat area under Jongra Union of the upazila at around 4:30 pm.

The deceased was identified as Khairul Islam, 35, son of Ruhul Amin, a resident of Dhabalguri area under the union. He was kwon as a Hadudu player. 
 
Quoting locals, Ward No. 8 Member of Jongra UP in Patgram Nazrul Islam said that a group of 10 to 12 players were heading towards Saniajan Union of Hatibandha Upazila from Jongra Union of Patgram Upazila in the afternoon riding on a tractor to take part in a Hadudu game. 

On the way, the tractor overturned after losing its control over the steering in Dharala Bridge Nander Ghat area on the Dhabalguri-Sarkerer Haat regional road at around 4:30 pm, which left Khairul dead on the spot and at least four other players seriously injured. 

Later on, the injured persons were rescued and admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, the UP member added.

BARAIGRAM, NATORE: A local activist of BNP was killed after being hit by a bus in Baraigram Upazila of the district on Thursday night.

The accident took place in Ahmedpur Bus Stand area on the Natore-Dhaka highway under the upazila at around 8 pm.

The deceased was identified as Shafiqul Islam, 40, son of late Jonab Sarker, a resident of Ahmedpur Village. 

He was a plaintiff in a case of vandalism and house torching filed against former lawmaker and District Awami League Public Health Affairs Secretary Dr Siddiqur Rahman Patwari with Baraigram Police Station (PS).  
      
Quoting local people, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jhalmalia Highway PS Mahabubur Rahman said that Shafiqul was crossing the Natore-Dhaka highway in Ahmedpur Bus Stand area at night. At that time, a Dhaka-bound bus of 'Hanif Paribahan' from Natore hit him, leaving the man dead on the spot.

Agitated locals then blocked the highway for some time.

Later on, highway police controlled the situation after seizing the killer bus.

Legal action would be taken in this connection, the OC added.

KALIGANJ, GAZIPUR: Two young men were killed and another was injured after being hit by a cover van in Kaliganj Upazila of the district on Thursday. 

The accident took place in front of KN Enterprise Petrol Pump on the Gazipur-Itakhola regional road of the upazila in the afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Mostafizur Rahman, 20, son of Siraj Uddin Akand, and Nahidul Akanda, 20, son of expatriate Rafiqul Islam. Both of them were residents of Norun Village in the upazila. 

The injured person is Niloy Khandaker, 21.

Kaliganj PS OC Md Alauddin confirmed the accident on Friday noon. 

According to police and local sources, the three friends were heading towards Jamalpur to watch a football match on Thursday afternoon riding on a motorcycle. As they approached the KN Enterprise Petrol Pump on the Gazipur-Itakhola road, their motorcycle skidded, causing them to fall onto the road. At that moment, a covered van, heading towards Gazipur, ran over them.

Mostafizur died on the spot while Nahidul and Niloy were critically injured.
 
The injured were then rescued by locals and taken to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor advised transferring Nahidul to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) due to his deteriorated condition. Later on, Nahidul succumbed to his injuries on the way to the DMCH.

Kaliganj PS OC Md Alauddin stated that as the families of the deceased youths had no objections, the bodies were handed over to the relatives without autopsies following a formal application.

RAJSHAHI: An auto-van driver was killed in a road accident in Mohanpur Upazila of the district on Thursday noon.

The accident took place in Kesharhat Banshhata area on the Rajshahi-Naogaon highway of the upazila at around 1 pm.

The deceased was identified as Aminul Islam, 47, son of Kasimuddin, a resident of Sankoa Village under the upazila.
 
Police and local sources said that Aminul was riding his battery-run auto-van at noon. At around 1 pm, a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction collided head-on with his auto-van in Kesharhat Banshhata area, which left him seriously injured.
 
Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene, rescued the injured and immediately took him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).

Later on, Aminul succumbed to his injuries at the RMCH while undergoing treatment.

Being informed, police recovered the body and handed it over to the deceased's family members following legal procedures. 

Mohanpur PS OC Abdul Hannan confirmed the incident.

KALAPARA, PATUAKHALI: At least four people were injured in a head-on collision between a battery-run auto-van and a motorcycle in Kalapara Upazila of the district on Thursday.

The accident took place in Tulatali Bus Stand area of Kuakata in the upazila at noon.

The injured persons are: motorcycle driver Belal, 27, its pillion rider Kaiyum, 40, auto-van driver Roni, 28, and its passenger Shahjalal, 32. They are residents of different areas under Mahipur PS in the upazila. 

It was known that a motorcycle and a battery-run auto-van collided with each other in Tulatali Bus Stand area of Kuakata at noon, which left four people injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and took them to Kuakata 20-bed Hospital, where the on-duty doctor shifted Kaiyum to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) following the deterioration of his condition.

Physician of Kuakata Hospital Dr Ashiqur Rahman confirmed the matter.

Mahipur PS OC Tariqul Islam said that on information, police visited the scene and necessary steps would be taken in this connection.

BARISHAL: A female student of Barishal University was killed after being hit by a bus in the city on Wednesday night.

The accident took place in Bholar Mor of the university area on the Barishal-Kuakata highway at around 9:30 pm.

The deceased was identified as Maisha Fouzia Mim, a student of Statistics Department at the university.

It was known that a Barishal-bound bus of 'Narayanganj Travels Paribahan' from Kuakata hit Maisha in Bholar Mor of the university area at night while she was crossing the Barishal-Kuakata highway, which left the girl seriously injured.

Injured Maisha was then rescued and taken to the SBMCH, where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.

Bandar PS OC Md Rafiqul Islam confirmed the incident.
