A Rangpur court on Sunday sentenced two individuals to death and another to rigorous life term imprisonment in connection with the double murder at Pirganj upazila in Rangpur district in 2018.
The verdict was delivered on Sunday afternoon by the Judge of Rangpur Senior District and Sessions Judge Court, Fazle Khoda Md Nazir, in the presence of the convicts.
Of the convicted, Abdur Rashid alias Nannu Mondal, and Harun Mondal received the death sentence, while Akmal Hossain (40) was sentenced to rigorous life term imprisonment.
Public Prosecutor Aftab Uddin explained that the murders stemmed from a land dispute in Mojila Taherpur area under the upazila, where Rafiqul Islam, 45, and Abdur Razzak Mondal, 40, were killed on July 18, 2018, following a violent altercation.
A murder case was filed at Pirganj Police Station the following day.
After a detailed investigation, police submitted a charge-sheet naming three accused.
Following witness testimonies and substantial evidence, the judge found the defendants guilty beyond any reasonable doubt.
"We have achieved justice," said Public Prosecutor Aftab Uddin. "Anyone who commits a crime must face consequences."
Meanwhile, the defense attorney has announced plans to appeal the decision in a higher court.
