Police have unveiled the mystery behind a shocking double murder case in Patuakhali and arrested the main accused, who later confessed in court.
The breakthrough in the case was announced in a press briefing by the district police on Sunday (November 3).
The victims, elderly couple Ashraf Ali Howlader, 77, and his wife Hosne Ara Begum, 70, were murdered in their home in Bahalgachhia area of Patuakhali on July 20.
The main suspect, Mohammad Ali, 32, who lived in the same neighborhood, has now been apprehended by police after three months.
Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) in Patuakhali Md Sajedul Islam explained that on the night of July 20 around 9:30 PM, Mohammad Ali drove his rented electric rickshaw, along with an accomplice, to the elderly couple's residence. They allegedly broke into the house carrying a wrench to assist in the crime. During a search of the house for valuables, Hosne Ara Begum became aware of the intruders, prompting them to strike her fatally on the head with a heavy wooden stick. The intruders then arranged her body on the bed.
As the crime unfolded, the woman's husband, Ashraf Ali, entered the house after unlocking the main gate. Hearing his steps, the attackers hid by the bathroom. When Ashraf Ali discovered his wife's condition and began shouting, Mohammad Ali and his accomplice emerged, assaulting him multiple times with the wrench until he succumbed to his injuries. The suspects then escaped by scaling the wall near a pond on the property.
Additional SP (Administration) Ahmed Mainul Hasan said that, following intense investigations using modern technology and collaboration with the district detective team, the main suspect was apprehended.
Upon being presented in court, Mohammad Ali admitted his involvement and provided a full statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Police are investigating to determine any potential motives or additional individuals behind the crime, with ongoing efforts to locate and arrest other accomplices involved, he added.
