Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) district unit has filed a case against former Superintendant of Police (SP) SM Murad Ali and Sadar Thana officer-in-charge (OC) Masuk Ali and 53 other police personnel on charge of attacking and torturing party activists in Habiganj in 2021.

Shamsul Islam Matin, general secretary of Lakhai Upazila unit of BNP, filed the case with the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate court on Sunday accusing the police officials.

The court fixed November 5 for the hearing of the case.

According to case documents, district unit BNP organised rally at Shayesthaganj, Habiganj, on December 22 in 2021 demanding release and medical treatment of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

BNPs central leaders also joined the meeting.

But police personnel, led by the then SP, put barricade on the way to a rally and opened fire on party members gathered outside the BNP office and tortured them mercilessly.

Over 300 activists of BNP and its front organizations, including district Chhatra Dal unit President Ringon, were injured in the incident.

The case followed a previous complaint on the matter that was dismissed by the court.

BNP Organising Secretary GK Gaus said that the case was filed in accordance with party decisions.
