BNP does not support banning any political party, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Saturday.
Speaking at a remembrance meeting marking the second death anniversary of Sabihuddin Ahmed former foreign advisor of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at Mohakhali BRAC Centre he said, "BNP is not in favuor of banning any political party. Issues are being created unnecessarily in the name of banning political parties."
Fakhrul said, "There may be a conspiracy behind it. The issue is being brought to the fore by some people who are asking for banning Jatiya Party."
He said that, Sabihuddin Ahmed worked for the people and democracy all his life.
"Sabihuddin Ahmed, a sports enthusiast, was full of energy. He would be happy if he could see Bangladesh free from fascism," he said.
Finance Adviser Saleh Uddin Ahmed, BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam and well wishers of Sabihuddin Ahmed were present in the memorial meeting.
Sabihuddin Ahmed studied economics at Dhaka University. Later, he joined the Pakistan Civil Service.
He served as the private secretary to the then prime minister Khaleda Zia in 1991.
In 2001, Sabihuddin Ahmed was Environment and Forest Ministry Secretary.
He was Bangladesh High Commissioner to the UK.
After retiring as a secretary, Sabihuddin Ahmed joined BNP and was appointed as a foreign affairs adviser of the party chairperson.
He took a break from politics in 2017 as he was suffering from neurological complications.
He died after suffering stroke at the age of 76 in 2022.
