The Bangladesh Women's National Football Team, which won the SAFF Women's Championship for the second consecutive time recently, was warmly welcomed by the Chief Adviser, Prof Muhammad Yunus, on Saturday at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka.

The women defeated Nepal 2-1 in a nail-biting final of the SAFF Women's Championship 2024 and retained the trophy in Kathmandu, Nepal on October 30. The repetitive success of the women moved people from all walks of life in the country. The Chief Adviser was no different and invited the women to his office.

In the reception programme, the Chief Adviser praised the victorious women for their achievements and invited them to share their life stories, struggles, and aspirations. The footballers too gladly shared with the Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus their vision and their everyday struggles.

Dr Muhammad Yunus took time and listened to all the stories and demands of the Bangladesh team on the day. He also promised to address their issues and requests on a priority basis.

In his opening remarks, the CA said, "I congratulate you on behalf of the whole nation on achieving this success. The nation is grateful to you. The people of our country want success. You have brought us success."

Listening to the women's life stories and struggles, the Chief Adviser became overwhelmed. He asked the players to write down their hopes and aspirations, struggles, and demands on separate pieces of paper and share those with his office.

"Do not hesitate to write whatever you wish. We will try to fulfil your demands. If anything can be addressed now, we will do it now," said Dr Yunus.

Bangladesh skipper Sabina Khatun and her mates were thankful to the CA for hosting them and listening to their stories. She said that they felt honoured to be able to attend the reception.

She said, "We have come to this stage by overcoming a lot of barriers. Not only the women's football team but also the women in Bangladesh face many struggles."

Recalling the contribution of her previous generation for showing the courage to take football as their passion, Sabina said that many of them come from underprivileged families and societies and that they also have the responsibility to support their families.

Sabina added, "Our salaries do not allow us to give much support, as we do not get much."

The CA was informed of Maria Manda who came from the famous Kolosindur village in Mymensingh, which gifted six players to the SAFF-winning team, lost her father early and was raised by her mother.

Midfielder Manika Chakma shared the difficulties she faced to become a footballer in Lakhmichhari, one of the remotest upazilas of the hilly Khagrachhari district. Midfielder Swapna Rani described the poor infrastructure of her native Ranishonkail village in Dinajpur district. Winger Krishna requested the Chief Adviser to arrange a friendly match for them outside Asia, preferably against European Champions League winners Barcelona.

In the meantime, winger Krishna Rani Sarkar raised the issue of their accommodation in Dhaka.

Coach Peter Butler and manager Mahmuda Akter also attended the occasion with the women.

Among others, the Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud, Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Adviser Supradip Chakma, the Primary and Mass Education Adviser Prof Dr Bidhan Ranjan Roy, and the Health and Family Welfare Adviser Nurjahan Begum were present at the reception.
