57 detained on different charges in 11 districts

A total of 57 people have been detained on different charges in separate drives in 11 districts - Barishal, Cox's Bazar, Bogura, Chapainawabganj, Moulvibazar, Khulna, Sunamganj, Kurigram, Rajshahi, Chattogram and Noakhali, in recent times.
  
BARISHAL: A total of 14 people were arrested on different charges in separate drives in the district recently.

The driver of the bus that killed a student of Barishal University has been arrested from Khasherhat Village in Patuakhali District.

The arrested person is Jamil Hossain, 27, a driver of 'Travels Paribahan' bus.

He was arrested from a house of his cousin at around 11:30 pm on Friday, said Commissioner of Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP) Md Shafiqul Islam.

Earlier, Maya Fauzia Mim, a student of Statistics Department of Barishal University, was killed after being hit by a bus in Barishal at around 9 pm on Wednesday.

When the death news spread, the students of the university blocked Barishal-Kuakata-Barguna-Bhola regional routes.

Vehicular movement on the route remained suspended till 10 pm on Friday following the demonstration, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bandar Police Station (PS) Rafiqul Islam.

On the other hand, Detective Branch (DB) of Police arrested three members including a female of an inter-district snatchers' gang in the city.

BMP Media Cell confirmed the matter in a press briefing on Wednesday afternoon. 

The arrested persons are: Rafiqul Islam, 35, of Airport PS in the city, and Tamanna Akhter Toma, 20, of Bakerganj Upazila in Barishal; and Md Mostakim Billah Roni, 24, hails from Nalchity Upazila in Jhalakati District.  

According to BMP Media Cell, on information, a team of the DB police conducted a drive in Nathullabad BRTC Bus Depot area on Tuesday night, and detained the trio.

District DB Police Inspector Md Sagir Hossain confirmed the matter, adding that the arrested were handed over to the PS concerned.

Meanwhile, Police and members of Rapid Action Battalion, in joint drives, arrested five people in connection with the murder of of auto-rickshaw driver Hiran Hawlader in the district recently.

BMP Media Cell confirmed the matter in a press release.

The arrested persons are: Md Al-Amin, 33, Murad, 20, Ariful Islam Sabbir, 20, Rasib, 29, and Jahangir Hossain, 45.

The press release said that the five killed Hiran Hawlader, 40, before snatching his auto-rickshaw at the night of September 8 last.

After 29 days of his missing, police recovered the decomposed body of Hiran from a ditch in Sapania area of Charbaria Union under Kawnia PS on October 7 last. 

The deceased's wife then lodged a murder case with October 8 the next day.

Following this, police and RAB members conducted separate drives in different areas, and arrested the five including the main accused Al-Amin. 

Earlier, police arrested five men in connection with the gang-rape of a housewife in the city recently. 

The arrested men are: Shahin Hawlader, 25, Shah Alam, 25, Sabuj Hawlader, 22, and Mithu Chaprashi, 26, residents of Wazirpur Upazila; and Jahid Hawlader, 37, of Bakerganj Upazila in the district.

BMP's Airport PS OC Jakir Shikder confirmed the matter.

The OC said that the victim along with her husband used spend some night at a residential hotel in the city before renting a home as the husband lives in the city for business purpose. 

Recently, hotel boy Jahid came to the housewife and told her that one Shahin has her intimate video. With this video, Jahid, Shahin and others took her to a house in Rahmatpur area of Babuganj Upazila after blackmailing her. Later on, the accused persons raped the woman there.

On the same night, the victim along with her husband filed a case with Airport PS. Following this, police arrested the five and sent them to the jail following a court order, the OC added. 

COX'S BAZAR: Members of RAB arrested the manager of former Cox's Bazar MP Abdur Rahman Bodi, also known as 'Yaba Bodi'. 
The arrested man is Jafar, a former chairman of Teknaf Upazila, listed by the Ministry of Home Affairs as one of the top drug dealers in Bangladesh.

RAB-15's Senior Assistant Director (Legal and Media), Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Md Kamruzzaman, confirmed the matter on Friday. 

He said that Jafar was detained in a joint operation by RAB-3 and RAB-15 teams in Dhaka's Purba Basabo area at around 3 am on October 31.

ASP Kamruzzaman also said that Jafar is being transferred from Dhaka to Cox's Bazar for further processing and investigation.
BOGURA: DB Police arrested three leaders and activists of Awami League (AL) from different places in the district on Thursday.
They were arrested during a drive at various locations throughout the day.

The arrested men are: Abu Sayed, president of the Ward No. 9 under Shibganj Municipality AL unit; Faruque Hossain, 38, vice-president of the Shibganj Upazila Swechasebak League; and Sramik League leader Md Alal, 44.

District DB Police OC Mustafiz confirmed the information on Friday morning. The arrested individuals have been sent to the jail as they are accused in various cases.

GOMASTAPUR, CHAPAINAWABGANJ: Police arrested 21 persons during an overnight drive after three police personnel were injured in an attack when they went to arrest a local AL leader in Gomastapur Upazila of the district on Thursday evening.

Chapainawabganj SP Md Rezaul Karim confirmed the matter on Friday.

He said that after interrogation, 13 of them were found involved in the incident and rest eight persons were released primarily. If their involvement with the incident is proved, necessary legal actions will be taken against them, the SP added.

Police said, a team of eight policemen from Gomastapur PS led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Abul Kalam Azad went to Santaspur Bazar area under Bangabari Union of Gomastapur Upazila on Thursday evening to arrest Mintu Rahman, a ward AL leader of Bangabari Union. Mintu is an accused of a number of cases.

As the police team reached the area to arrest Mintu, a group of people launched attack the police personnel.

KULAURA, MOULVIBAZAR: Two individuals were arrested by police reportedly over violating a 20-year-old woman under the pretence of marriage in Kulaura Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The arrests were made early Wednesday in Rautgaon Union area of the upazila.

The arrested individuals are: Mohammad Soyeb Islam Tanin, 23, of Lalpur Village in the same union, and Mohammad Nijam Uddin Jayed, 22, from the same locality.
 
According to the case statement and police sources, the victim and Tanin developed a romantic relationship two months back. 

During their communication, on October 27, Tanin took the victim to Jayed's rented house. There, he allegedly raped her with a false promise of marriage. Later on, the victim informed her family about the incident and attempted to contact Tanin's family.

However, both Tanin and his family refused to agree to the marriage, leading the victim to file a case against Tanin on October 29 under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. Jayed was also named as a co-accused in the case.
 
Subsequently, SI Habibur Rahman and his team conducted an operation and arrested both suspects.

Kulaura PS OC Mohammad Golam Apchar said that the arrested individuals were sent to the jail through a court on Wednesday afternoon.

KHULNA: Members of Joint forces, in a drive, arrested four robbers from Rupsha Upazila of the district early Wednesday.

On information, a joint forces team comprised of Coast Guard and police went on a drive in Ghupiar Khal area under Rupsha Upazila and arrested the leader of the robber syndicate Sabbir Hossain and his three accomplices at the early hours of Wednesday, said Officer of Coast Guard West Zone Lieutenant Mahbub Hossain.

The law enforcement agencies also seized a homemade shooter gun, four rounds of bullets, three hand bombs, and 100 pieces of contra banned yaba tablets, three lethal weapons and four mobile phones from their possession.

SUNAMGANJ: Police arrested a youth over allegations of killing a woman and her son in Hasan Nagar area in Sadar Upazila of the district on Tuesday night.

The arrested person is Fahmid, a resident of Bishwamvarpur Upazila of the district.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of police conducted a drive in Savar area at around 8 pm and arrested Fahmid, said Sunamganj SP AFM Anowar Hossain Khan.

Earlier, a woman and her son were hacked to death by some unidentified miscreants at their house in Hasan Nagar area of Sunamganj Town on Tuesday.

Sunamganj Sadar PS OC Nazmul Haque said that they are searching for the others involved in the murder.

KURIGRAM: Two local leaders of the AL were arrested by DB Police in the district in connection with the murder of a student, named Ashiqur Rahman, during the recent quota reform movement.

The arrested individuals are: Fazle Nur Tanu, 60, joint secretary of District AL, and Ahsan Habib Tanu, 62, president of Ulipur Upazila AL.

They were arrested from Zilla Parishad Market area in the district town. 

Kurigram Sadar PS OC Md Nazmul Alam confirmed the matter. 

According to the case statement, a clash erupted between student and AL leaders and activists on August 4 during student movement. During the altercation, Ashiqur Rahman sustained a head injury and later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Dhaka. Following this incident, another student, Ruhul Amin, filed a case with the PS, naming 104 individuals while accusing 500 to 600 unnamed others. 

Although the names of the two arrested leaders were not mentioned in the case, they were subsequently shown as arrested in connection with it.

The duo will be produced before the court on Monday, the police official added

RAJSHAHI: A female leader of the banned organization Chhatra League was arrested in the district after coming to attend examination.

Arrested Jannatul Ferdous Priya was the environment affairs secretary of Rajshahi City Chhatra League. 

She went to the Rajshahi Government Mohila College examination hall to appear at an examination on October 27. Witnessing her, other examinees started shouting. Later on, the college administration handed her over to Boalia PS in face of students' demand.

Expressing anonymity, a student said the Chhatra League leader threatened general students in various ways during the anti-discrimination student movement in the city. Even, she sent the lists of student who took part in the movement, to the central leaders of Chhatra League.

Jannatul Ferdous Priya is a close associate of Anika Fariha Zaman, eldest daughter of AL presidium member AHM Khairuzzaman Liton. She was a member of Women Coordination Committee of Mayor Liton's electoral areas.

CHATTOGRAM: Three people were arrested on different charges in the district.

RAB arrested a fugitive convict, who was sentenced to 10 years' jail term, from city's Oxyzen Crossing area.

Shariful Alam, senior assistant director of the RAB, said the arrested Nur Nobi, son of Fazal Ahmed, hailed from Dholoi Village under Hathazari Upazila of the district was convicted over a drug case filed with Ashulia PS nine years back.

Nur Nobi left the area and went into hiding after filling the case.

He has been convicted by the court in his absentia in the case filed with Ashulia PS in Dhaka.

Later, a Dhaka court awarded 10 years' imprisonment to Nur Nabi and fined him Tk 50,000, in default, six more months of rigorous imprisonment.

He was handed over to the respective PS for further legal action.

Meanwhile, police arrested two individuals in connection with the murder of a youth in Chandgaon area. 

They were arrested from Hadumazipara of Panchlaish and Hathazari area of Raozan. 

The arrested are: Md. Helal and Elias Hossain Apu, however, the alleged mastermind behind the attack, notorious gang leader Sajjad Hossain alias Choto Sajjad, remains at large.

According to Additional Deputy Commissioner (Public Relations) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police Kazi Md Tarek Aziz, during police interrogation, both Helal and Elias confessed to their involvement in the killing of Aftab Uddin Tahsin, 26. Later, they were sent to jail following their court appearance.

The murder occurred on October 21 in broad daylight, when a group of armed youths arrived in a microbus and shot Tahsin in Chandgaon's Adurpara area. The incident is reportedly linked to a long-standing feud over territorial control between two rival groups led by Sarwar Hossain alias Babla, and Choto Sajjad. Tahsin was known to be affiliated with Babla's group.

Tahsin's family claims that he was involved in the construction materials business and was targeted by Choto Sajjad over extortion demands. 

Following the murder, Tahsin's father Md. Musa filed a case with Chandgaon PS naming Sajjad and four others as suspects.

NOAKHALI: Joint forces arrested five people along with firearms from Sadar Upazila in the district recently.

The arrested are: Abul Kalam alias Kalan, Mehraz, 46, Md Liton, 32, Md Saddam, 26, and Abir Mia, 18.

Locals said that Kalan along with others made a tiktok post recently, where the firearms were shown. 

Following this, the joint forces arrested the five along with the firearms and some indigenous weapons from Charmatua area of the upazila. 

Noakhali Camp Army In-Charge Lt Col Rifat Anwar confirmed the matter, adding that the arrested were handed over to Sudharam Model PS.
