RAJSHAHI, Nov 2: Cultivation of Nasik-53 species of onion is increasing in the district.

Compared to last year, this year the onion cultivation has been two and a half times  in Rajshahi.   This is an Indian onion species.

Growers are expecting Tk 1 lakh profit per bigha.

According to sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE)- earlier only tuber onion would be cultivated in the country; the summer onion cultivation has begun since 2020-21 financial year; Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) imported the Nasik-53 species seed from India and distributed among growers free of cost.

According to DAE-Rajshahi sources, in the 2020-21 financial year, only 200 bighas of land were brought under the onion in Rajshahi, Naogaon, Natore and Chapainawabganj; in 2021-22 financial year during Kharip-1 season, the onion species was cultivated on 500 bigha land and 5,200 bigha during Kharip-2.

During the Kharip-1 in 2023-24 financial year, Nasik-53 was cultivated on 5,200 bighas and 6,200 bighas during Kharip-2.

During Kharip-1 in 2024-25 financial year, the onion has been cultivated on 13,000 bigha of land.

Agriculture officials are expecting 15-20 tonnes of onion production per hectare.

A grower of Khetur Village Ehsanul Kabir Tuku in Godagari Upazila has cultivated Nasik-53 on six bigha land for the first time. He got seeds free of cost from the DAE.

He planted saplings on August 24.

A recent visit found appearing of onions on the surface of his land. His caretaker Rakib Ali said, this onion species needs a bit raised land having irrigation facility; and sandy loam spoil is suitable for this onion; that is why one truck of river soil was dumped on per bigha land; and one trolley organic fertiliser per bigha was also blended.

By the end of November, the onion lifting will begin when per piece onion will grow up to 100 gram, he added.

He further said, agriculture officials said per bigha production will stand at Tk 120 maunds; but if the per bigha production is 80 maunds, the profit will be Tk 1 lakh.

Sub-Assistant Agriculture Atia Rahman of Kanthalbaria Block at Godagari said, "Nasik-53 has been cultivated in my area for the first time. We are yet to see any major problem."

Deputy Director of BADC-Rajshahi KM Golam Sarwar said, "Nasik-53 grows hugely in India. To meet onion deficit, the initiative has been taken to cultivate it in our country. Under exchange agreement, the seed of the onion is imported."

The farming is increasing as growers get good profit, he added.

DAE's Additional Director Mahmudul Faruq confirmed the increased farming of Nasik-53.

Growers are benefitting by farming the offseason onion, he added.
