BNP leader Dr Shahadat Hossain, who was recently declared the mayor-elect of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) through a court order, will take oath on Sunday.
AF Hassan Ariff, Adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, will administer the oath at 11AM in the Local Government Division’s conference room at the Secretariat in Dhaka.
Senior government officials and key BNP leaders, with many party supporters from Chattogram are expected to attend the ceremony.
Following the ceremony, the new CCC mayor will visit the mausoleum of BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman to pay tribute. Shahadat is scheduled to return to Chattogram on November 5 to formally begin his duties, said Shahadat’s personal secretary Maruful Haque Chowdhury.
Earlier, Dr Shahadat Hossain filed the case seeking cancellation of the results of CCC election held on January 27, 2021. Awami League candidate Rezaul Karim Chowdhury won by securing 3,69,248 votes. In that election, his nearest rival BNP's mayoral candidate Shahadat Hossain got 52,489 votes.
Dr Shahdat filed the case on February 24, 2021 for widespread electoral fraud and several others of rigging the polls.
On October 1, Election Tribunal judge as well as Joint District and session judge Mohammad Khairul Amin declared Shahadat as the mayor, canceling Rezaul Karim’s victory. The court also directed the election commission secretary to publish a gazette within next 10 days, which was released on October 8 following the ruling.
