An elderly man was murdered reportedly by his nephews over a longstanding land dispute in Noakhali Sadar upazila on Saturday.
The incident took place on Saturday in Hakimpur village under ward No. 2 of Dadpur union in the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Abu Sayeed, 70, a resident of the same area and a local Awami League member.
Citing locals, former Noannoi Union Parishad chairman Zakiul Islam said that Sayeed had a longstanding dispute with his nephews, Hasan and Hossain, over family property. The clash erupted when Sayeed was allegedly harvesting betel nuts from a tree on his property and his nephews confronted him. An argument ensued which escalated into a physical assault. Abu Sayeed reportedly died at the scene.
Family members detained nephew Hasan and handed him over to the police.
Sudharam Police Station officer-in-charge Kamrul Islam said, "There were no visible signs of injury on the deceased. The body has been sent to Noakhali General Hospital for an autopsy, and the exact cause of death will be determined after receiving the report."
