Separate courts in four days sentenced a man to death and four others to life-term imprisonment in different murder and drugs cases in three districts - Jamalpur, Sirajganj and Narayanganj.

JAMALPUR: A court in the district on Thursday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife for dowry in Islampur Upazila in 2022.

Judge of District Woman and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Mohammad Rafiqul Islam handed down the verdict on Thursday.

The court also fined the convict Tk 50,000.

The condemned convict is Md Ahsan Habib, 28, son of Md Azahar Ali, a resident of Rajnagar Village under Islampur Upazila in the district.

According to the prosecution, convict Ahsan Habib used to torture his wife Tithi Begum for dowry. As she failed to meet her husband's demands, Ahsan strangled Tithi to death with a scarf on April 12, 2022.

Abbas Ali Farazi, maternal uncle of Tithi Begum, filed a murder case with Islampur Police Station (PS) in this connection following the murder of his niece.

After investigation, police then submitted the charge-sheet to the court accusing Ahsan Habib.

Following this, the tribunal judge pronounced the verdict on Thursday after examining the case records and taking depositions of the witnesses.

SIRAJGANJ: A court in the district on Thursday sentenced three people to life-term imprisonment for killing a farmer in Raiganj Upazila in 2022.

Sirajganj Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Kaniz Fatima handed down the verdict at noon in presence of the convicts.

The court also fined the convicts Tk 5,000 each, and in default, they have to suffer one more month of simple imprisonment.

The condemned convicts are: Shakil Sheikh, 19, son of Abu Bakkar, and Nayeb Ali, 40, son of Amzad Ali, residents of Joyanpur Village in Raiganj Upazila; and Abdur Razzak, 42, son of Hazrat Ali, a resident of Ghurka Village under Salanga PS in the district.

At the same time, the court acquitted another accused as the allegations brought against him could not be proved.

According to the prosecution, the accused killed farmer Saiful Islam on October 10, 2022 following a previous enmity, and dumped the body under water hyacinth in Ghurkagram Village. On October 13 of that year, police recovered the body.

The deceased's wife, being the plaintiff, lodged a murder case with the PS concerned accusing six to seven unnamed persons.

After investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court against four people.

Following this, the court pronounced the verdict on Thursday noon after examining the case records and taking depositions of the witnesses.
