Road mishaps claim 11 lives in 10 districts

A total of 11 people including three minor girls have been killed and four others injured in separate road accidents in 10 districts - Rajshahi, Manikganj, Gaibandha, Rajshahi, Jhenidah, Narail, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Feni, in recent times.

RAJSHAHI: Two people including an army man were killed in a road accident in Mohanpur Upazila of the district on Thursday night.

The accident took place in Saipara area on the Naogaon-Rajshahi highway under the upazila at around 11:15 pm.

The deceased were identified as Palash, 22, an army soldier posted at Savar Cantonment and son of Mumtazul Islam, hailed from Daspara Village under Manda Upazila, and Abdul Quddus, 40, a resident of Raninagar Upazila in Naogaon District.

Quoting locals, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mohanpur Police Station (PS) Abdul Hannan said that the two were going to Naogaon from Rajshahi at night riding on a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw. 

When the auto-rickshaw reached Saipara area of Mohanpur Upazila at around 11:15 pm, it collided with with an engine-powered three-wheeler coming from the opposite direction, which left the duo seriously injured.

Locals then rescued the injured, but the both succumbed to their injuries on the way to Mohanpur Upazila Health Complex. 

Being informed, police recovered the body and necessary steps would be taken in this regard, the OC added.

MANIKGANJ: A schoolgirl was killed and her parents were injured after a goods-laden truck hit a motorcycle in Tara Bridge area on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in the district on Thursday morning.

The deceased was identified as Mithila Das, 12, daughter of Liton Das, a resident of Nali Village under Shivalaya Upazila in the district. She was a seventh grader at Savar Laboratory School and College.

Liton Das said that he along with his wife and daughter was heading towards Manikganj from Savar riding on a motorcycle. When they reached Tara Bridge area at around 5 am, a truck hit the motorcycle, leaving Mithila dead on the spot and injuring her parents.

Locals rescued the injured and took them to Munnu Medical College Hospital.

GAIBANDHA: A man was killed in a road accident in Palashbari Upazila of the district on Tuesday evening.

The accident took place in Jheelbandha area under the upazila at around 7 pm.

The deceased was identified as Jewel Mia, 32, son of Bablu Mia, a resident of Board Bazar area under Mohadipur Union in the upazila.

Police and local sources said that Jewel Mia was going towards Palashbari Upazila Town in the evening riding on a CNG-run auto-rickshaw.

On the way, the auto-rickshaw collided with a tractor coming from the opposite direction in Jheelbandha area at around 7 pm, which left him critically injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and took him to Palashbari Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared the man dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body.

Palashbari PS OC Julfikar Ali Bhutto confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this connection.

RAJSHAHI: A minor child was killed after being crushed by a bus in the city on Tuesday noon.

The accident took place in Bhadra Mor area under Boalia Model PS of the city at around 1:30 pm.

The deceased was identified as Maria Aktar Juthi, 7, daughter of Hasan Molla, a resident of Meherchandi area in the upazila.

It was known that a bus hit an auto-rickshaw from behind in Bhadra Mor area at noon, causing Maria to fall onto the road. The bus then ran over her, leaving her dead on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the body.

Local residents vandalised several buses following the incident. Later on, the army personnel arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.

However, the law enforcers could not be able to seize the killer bus as its driver managed to flee the scene soon after the incident.

Boalia Model PS OC Mehedi Masud confirmed the matter, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.

JHENIDAH: A minor girl was killed after being hit by a motorcycle in Sadar Upazila of the district on Tuesday noon.

The accident took place in Naldanga Bazar area on the Kaliganj- Naldanga road under the upazila at around 1:30 pm.

The deceased was identified as Fatema Khatun, 9, daughter of Nayan, a resident of the aforesaid area. 

In-Charge of Naldanga Police Outpost Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Khorshed Ali said that the accident occurred at around 1:30 pm when she was crossing the Kaliganj- Naldanga road in Naldanga Bazar area, which left her seriously injured.

She was then rescued by locals and taken to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body. 

However, necessary steps would be taken in this connection, the ASI added.

NARAIL: An elderly man was killed after a bus crushed his bicycle in Lohagara Upazila of the district on Tuesday morning.

The accident took place in Boshupoti area on the Narail-Dhaka highway of the upazila at around 9 am.

The deceased was identified as Harez Molla, 72, a resident of Gilatola Village in the upazila.

Local sources said that Harez Molla was riding a bicycle in the morning. At around 9 am, a bus hit his bicycle in Boshupoti area on the Narail-Dhaka highway, leaving Harez Molla dead on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene.

Lohagara PS OC Ashikur Rahman confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.

KHULNA: A member of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) was killed in a road accident in the city on Monday.

The accident took place in Chitrali Bazar area under Khalishpur PS of the city in the evening.

The deceased was identified as Murad Hossain, son of Sheikh Nazrul Islam, hailed from Kalia Upazila in Narail District. He worked as a BGB man. 

Deputy Police Commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) B M Nuruzzaman confirmed the incident, saying that the accident took place on Monday evening when a bus rammed into Murad's motorcycle from behind on the BIDC road in Chitrali Bazar area under Khalishpur PS of the city, leaving him seriously injured.

He was then rescued by locals and rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Being informed, police recovered the body.

Later on, the body was handed over to the deceased's family members.

However, legal procedures are under process in this regard, the KMP official added.

BARISHAL: A man was killed and two others were injured in a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a battery-run auto-rickshaw in Gournadi Upazila of the district on Monday.

The accident took place on the Nalchira-Pinglakathi road in the upazila at around 3:30 pm.

The deceased was identified as Maulana Belal Hossain, 35, son of late Aiyub Ali, a resident of Kandapasha Village under Nalchira Union in the upazila. He was posted as the finance secretary of the Nalchira Union Unit of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. 

Police and local sources said that a motorcycle carrying three people including Belal and a battery-run auto-rickshaw were collided head-on on the Nalchira-Pinglakathi road in the upazila at around 3:30 pm. All of the three were critically injured at that time.

Locals rescued the injured and took them to a nearby hospital, from where Belal was shifted to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) following the deterioration of his condition. 

Later on, Belal Hossain succumbed to his injuries at the SBMCH in the evening while undergoing treatment.
  
Gournadi Model PS OC Md Yunus Mia confirmed the incident. 

CHATTOGRAM: A man was killed in a road accident in Chandanaish Upazila of the district on Monday.

The accident took place early in the morning on the Bailtali-Anwara road in front of Barma Palli Bidyut Zonal Office at Kalirhat of the upazila.

The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Quoting locals, Chandnaish PS OC Imran Al Hossain said that an unidentified vehicle hit the man in front of Barma Palli Bidyut Zonal Office at Kalirhat in the morning, leaving him dead on the spot. 

Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene. 

However, the law enforcers are trying to find out the identity of the deceased. Legal action in this regard is under process, the OC added.

FENI: A teenage motorcyclist was killed in a road accident in Parshuram Upazila of the district on Sunday.

The accident took place in Malipathor area of the upazila in the afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Abdur Rahman, 16, son of Abdul Kader, a resident of Uttar Malipathor Village of the upazila.

Quoting locals, Parshuram PS OC Mohammed Nurul Hakim said that Abdur Rahman was riding a motorcycle in the afternoon. 

At one stage, he lost control over the steering of the motorcycle and hit a roadside tree in the area, which left him critically injured.

Locals then rescued the injured, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way to Dhaka.

However, necessary steps would be taken in this connection, the OC added.
