GAIBANDHA, Nov 1: Early or advance variety of transplanted (T)-Aman paddy is benefitting farmers of Gobindaganj Upazila in the district this season to earn economic profit against the crop.
Not only that the 2-crop land is being turned into 3-crop one and 3-crop land into 4-crop one which plays significant role to get additional crops and money for changing the lots of the farmers.
According to office sources, T-Aman paddy was cultivated on 31,700 hectares of land in the upazila during this season. Of them, some 87 hectares of land was cultivated early variety of Aman paddy in the upazila during the current season on trial basis to motivate the farmers.
As the early variety of paddy has been ripe, the farmers started harvesting the paddy with much enthusiasm.
The farmers are so much happy to get desired output as they are getting around 30 maunds of paddy from a bigha of land.
They are also in solvent mode because they are getting Tk 1500-1600 by selling a maund of paddy locally.
As the production is satisfactory and the price of the paddy is more, the farmers would bring more land under the farming in next seasons with the hope of getting more profit, farmers said.
After harvesting the early variety, the farmers would start potato or mustard cultivation to get an additional crop between the gap of Aman and Boro season, the farmers said.
Ziaul Haque Rintu, sub-assistant agriculture officer of Upazila Agriculture Office, said the farmers were motivated to cultivate paddy before the season. In response, the farmers cultivated BRRI Dhan-75 and BRRI Dhan-87 as advanced variety on their land this year.
Upazila Agriculture Officer M Mehedi Hasan said, for cultivating the early variety of Aman paddy, the 2-crop land is being turned into 3-crop one and 3-crop land into 4-crop one.
Through this farming, the farmers are being economically benefitted, he also said.
Initiative has been taken to expand the farming among the farmers of the upazila in coming seasons, he added.
