Man killed in violence at Mohammadpur Geneva Camp

A man was killed in a gunfire and improvised explosive blasts between two rival groups at Geneva Camp in Mohammadpur of Dhaka early Friday, over establishing supremacy and dispute on local narcotics trade in the camp.

The deceased was identified as Raja, 28, a resident of the camp.
Ali Iftekhar Hasan, Officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur Police Station, said Raja was a member of the ‘Bunia Sohel gang’ and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Sohel from Sylhet on Thursday. 

Following Sohel's arrest, his rival Chua Selim has attempted to take control of the area, leading to clashes with Sohel’s gang.

Raja was killed in the clash amid gunfire and improvised explosive blasts early Friday.

OC Ali said law enforcers conducted a raid from 11PM on Thursday to 1AM on Friday in Sector 7 of the camp after hearing reports of trouble in the area.

After they left the area, the clash occurred around 3AM, he said.

The death toll from the violence centering the drug trade after the government changeover has now risen to five.

Meanwhile, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and Bosila army camps sources said that following the incident, the members of the ‘Daring Tigers: 23rd East Bengal Regiment’ under the 46th Independent Infantry Brigade went to the scene and conducted drives.

The army so far detained four people in connection with the incident but the identities of the detainees yet to be known.
