The Australian government on Thursday expressed its intension to take more Rohingyas, the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals who took shelter at Cox's Bazar region.
In a bilateral meeting held at the Home Ministry on Thursday, visiting Australian Home Minister Tony Burke expressed the intension. Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury led the Bangladesh delegation in the meeting while Burke led his country. While briefing after the meeting, Adviser Jahangir Alam informed that previously Australia had taken around 2,000 Rohingyas from Bangladesh and he urged his counterpart to take more Rohingyas, who have been living in the Teknaf and Ukhiya camps for years.
Jahangir Alam assured the Australian minister that Bangladesh is committed to ensure safe and regular migration. "Bangladesh will bring back the 97 Bangladeshis, who were held while trying to enter Australia without visa. They were held in an island near the country after they failed to enter Australia. They have been served necessary food and lodging there," he added.
In the meeting, the issues of cooperation to enhance inter-connectivity among the two countries people, preventing trans-national crimes, civil maritime security and maritime safety, training and enhancing capacity, prohibiting human trafficking and irregular migration and shifting the Rohingya people were discussed, according to the adviser.
