The joint forces led by Bangladesh Army have detained 45 individuals following some untoward incidents, including a series of clashes, extortions and robberies in the capital's Mohammadpur area.

"A total of 45 members of robbers, extortionists and juvenile gangs were arrested from Dhaka Udyan, Chand Udyan and Navodaya Housing in Mohammadpur area in a joint operation led by the army personnel, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-2) and police," a release of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Sunday evening.

Bangladesh Army is working with impartiality and professionalism in the prevailing situation of the country with an aim of preventing extrajudicial activities and maintaining the rule of law, as well as controlling the overall security and law and order situation of public life and important government facilities.

The operation of the joint forces was conducted in a well-planned manner with the aim of bringing relief to the lives of the inhabitants of Mohammadpur who were going through a sense of insecurity in recent time, it said.

During the operation, 45 alleged criminals were arrested with nine local sharp weapons from Mohammadpur area last night, the release added.

After the preliminary interrogation, the detainees were handed over to the police stations concerned.

Since the fall of the Awami League government, Mohammadpur area has become one of the most crime-prone areas in the capital, with incidents of gunfire, robbery, theft, and armed assaults becoming a regular phenomenon.

The operation is being conducted as a part of regular patrolling and operations of the joint forces under 'In Aid to Civil Power' to implement the directives of the current interim government, the release added.

Bangladesh Army will set up temporary camps in each housing area of Mohammadpur in the capital from Sunday afternoon to combat terrorism, mugging and robbery.

Army members will work around the clock at these camps to maintain law and order in the area.
