COX'S BAZAR, Oct 26: A teenage boy drowned while bathing in the sea in the district town on Saturday.
The incident occurred at Sugandha Point in the town at around 12:30 pm.
The deceased was identified as Mahmudur Rahman, son of Didarul Alam, a resident of Banglabazar area under Jhilongjha Union in Sadar Upazila of the district. He was a ninth grader at the local Jhumchari Dakhil Madrasa.
Quoting locals, Executive Magistrate of Tourism Division of the district administration Md Tanvir Hossain said that Mahmudur came to visit the sea beach along with six of his friends. After playing football for some time, they went to bathe in the sea. At one stage, Mahmudur drowned. Lifeguards rescued him in critical condition after hearing shouts from his friends.
Later on, he was taken to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
The body of the deceased was sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy and will be handed over to his family following legal procedures, the executive magistrate added.
