Tigers take lead after late-middle order steadiness

Bangladesh are lead by 81 runs at the end of Day 3 of the first Test against South Africa in the two-match series ridding on the bat of Meidy Hasan Miraz and Jaker Ali at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Tuesday.

Resuming from overnight's 101 for three, Bangladesh lost both the set batters early as both Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Mushfiqur Rahim could add two runs each to their previous day's 38 and 31 runs. Liton Das deepen the danger for Bangladesh as he got out cheaply for seven. 

From then, Miraz and Jaker started anchoring the innings and stood very crucial 128-run partnership in the 7th wicket till Jaker's dismissal on 58. Miraz then started fighting accompanying batter number-9 Nayeem Hasan till the end of the day's game due to bad light.

Miraz remained unbeaten on 87, while Nayeem was batting on 16 as Bangladesh posted 283 runs in their second innings losing seven wickets. 

Miraz, with this innings become the leading scorer for Bangladesh in the 2023-2025 cycle of the World Test Championship. He also hauled 30 wickets, which is the highest figure by a Bangladeshi bowler in the current cycle. 

He thus, becomes 3rd players in the World to score 500 runs and claim 30 wickets in a cycle after Ben Stokes of England and Ravindra Jadeja of India.

However, Kagiso Rabada took four wickets for South Africa, while Keshav Maharaj claimed the remaining three.

Earlier, Bangladesh won the toss on Monday and opted to bat but were bowled out for 106 runs due to poor batting performances.

Only Joy (30), Taijul Islam (16), Mehidy Hasan Miraz (13) and Mushfiqur Rahim (11) managed to reach double-digit figures. 

Rabada, Wiaan Mulder and Maharaj each took three wickets, with Dane Piedt grabbing the remaining one.

In response, South Africa piled-up 308 runs in their first innings after steadiness from Kyle Verreynne (114), Wiaan Mulder (54) and Piedt (32).

Taijul Islam took five wickets for Bangladesh, Hasan Mahmud claimed three and Miraz took the remaining wickets.
