CHAR FASSON,BHOLA, Oct 23: Ismail Maji of Dhalchar Union in Char Fasson Upazila of the district is passing hard days during this fishing ban time (Oct 13-Nov 3). He is expecting to overcome his hard time by catching Hilsa again after the ban over.

"Counting times only sitting idle. Though family running on starving after the ban, we can catch fishes," said Ismail.

Ayub Ali Maji, 50, of the same union said, "We live on fishing, if not we starve. We refrain from going to river for 22 days.

We don't want others to go. But what will we do now? How our family will run?"

This is the same condition of all fishers in different coastal fishing villages.

According to sources at the Upazila Fisheries office, as the allocation is not sufficient, all fishers are not getting the rice assistance.

Their lives have been gripped with frustration. Workless fishers have been given 40 kilogram rice each against VGF cards as special facility during the ban.

Yet allegation has been raised about corruption in the distribution as it was done through local unions and the Upazila Fisheries office.

Providing VGF cards in practice of corruption and nepotism have been alleged. That is why genuine fishers did not get cards. Most of the fishers are passing days in starvation or half-starvation.

Noor Hossain Maji at Samrajghat said, his family is of seven members; he got huge Hilsas this year and paid last year's loan of Mahajan; now he is repairing his boat taking a Dadon (a loan with high interest)  money of Tk 40,000. He did not get any assistance from the government.
