Jagannath University (JNU) celebrated its 19th founding anniversary and the orientation of its 19th batch on Sunday, embracing the theme "Empowered in Revolution, Fearless JnUians." The event was lively, with enthusiastic participation from faculty, students, staff, and officials.
The day started with various engaging activities. As part of the anniversary celebrations, the orientation for the new students created a warm atmosphere, with departments welcoming them with flowers, files, pens, and other gifts from 8:00am.
In the morning, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Rezaul Karim inaugurated the event at the Shaheed Minar by hoisting both the national flag and the Jagannath University flag. The ceremony included the national anthem and the release of balloons and doves, setting a festive tone for the day. Following this, a rally began at the university, winding through Raishahab Bazar and Bahadur Shah Park before returning to the campus. The rally featured students from various dormitories, departments and cultural organizations, showcasing a united community.
After the rally, the Vice-Chancellor unveiled a plaque commemorating the declaration of Jagannath University by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, located in front of the administrative building.
Later, an art exhibition was opened in the new academic building, celebrating creativity. At around 11:45am, a welcome programme and discussion for the new students took place on the Mukto Moncho, highlighting the importance of the university's 19th anniversary.
Additionally, a prayer meeting was held at the central mosque to honour the martyrs of the anti-discrimination student movement and to wish for the quick recovery of the injured.
The evening concluded with a cultural programme inspired by the July mass uprising. Parvez Hasan, a student from the Bengali department, said, "University day is a major celebration for us. We joyfully celebrated together, and each year brings a unique sense of belonging."
