Students of seven affiliated colleges to Dhaka University (DU) blocked Nilkhet and Science Laboratory intersections on Monday demanding separation of the institutions from the DU and establishment of a  university for their colleges.

After hours of blockade, the protesters issued 24-hour ultimatum to the interim government to take necessary steps to realise their three demands.

The demands included formation of a commission to establish an independent university for seven colleges, submission of reports by the commission within 30 days and coordination between the commission and DU until the report was made.

One of the movement coordinators Abdur Rahman, at a press conference at Science Laboratory Intersection, announced the ultimatum and warned of launching a tougher movement if their demands were not met by October 22.

The blockades in the two busy intersections halted traffic movement in and around the area since 11:00am.

Students started to gather in front of Dhaka College premises from 10:00am.

Later, the protesters in groups marched to the Nilkhet Intersection and Science Laboratory Intersection, occupying the streets.
In 2017, the Awami League government affiliated the seven public colleges to Dhaka University with an aim to improve quality of education and environment in the institutions.

"We want to be freed from the affiliation to Dhaka University. If necessary, an independent university can be established with the seven colleges. The UGC and other stakeholders must take a decision immediately. We don't want to remain stuck in session jams. We want to complete our four-year courses in four years," said Political Science student Rupa Banik of Eden Mahila College.

"We have gone to the DU Administrative Building several times and were harassed. We don't want to go there anymore. We want to be liberated from DU. We want an independent university. We don't want to be under another institution," said another protester.

Speaking to reporters, Dhaka College student Mahmudul Hasan said, "In 2017, we became affiliated to Dhaka University.

The DU administration oversees only examinations and results of the seven colleges. There has been no change in the quality of education. Because the results are published late, we are deprived in many cases."
