Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) successfully prevented an attempt by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) to construct a barbed wire fence near Panchbibi border in Joypurhat early Saturday morning.
The incident took place around 5:30 AM in Sonatala border area, under the jurisdiction of the Hatkhola BOP camp. BSF personnel were reportedly erecting a temporary barbed wire fence using bamboo poles about 20 yards inside Indian territory, in violation of international law, which prohibits construction within 150 yards of the border.
Local residents alerted the BGB patrol team, which swiftly intervened, halting the BSF's construction efforts. Joypurhat-20 BGB Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Mohammad Nahid Newaz confirmed the event, stating that the BGB’s timely action ensured the border's integrity remained intact.
Later that evening, a flag meeting was held between the two border forces, where both sides discussed the issue. Naik Subedar Naeemul Islam, company commander of Koya BOP, represented the BGB, while AC Ankur, company commander of the 137 Battalion BSF, led the Indian side. The BSF commander assured that there would be no further attempts to build the fence in restricted areas.
This was the latest in a series of similar incidents. On October 17, the BSF made two previous attempts to construct a barbed wire fence using iron poles in the same area, but both were thwarted by BGB forces. Following those incidents, a formal protest letter was issued by the Joypurhat-20 BGB Battalion to the 137 Battalion BSF commander.
