KSM Mostafizur Rahman, Managing Director of National AgriCare group and One Pharma Limited in an interview with The Daily Observer at his office at Hatirpool in the city emphasized the crucial need for enhancing agricultural productivity to combat inflation.

Rahman speaking on Saturday highlighted that increasing agricultural output is imperative for stabilizing supply of agri-products and the economy, and this requires lowering production costs significantly through improved agronomy practices.

He said a major obstacle is the presence of middlemen in marketing of agricultural products. "To achieve sustainable agricultural growth, we must eliminate middlemen who inflate costs and distort market prices," he opined.

Rahman suggested thorough research, focusing on crop physiology, to identify which crops are both profitable and sustainable. He noted, "Currently, there is a significant gap in research regarding crop viability, and without this data, we cannot optimize our agricultural practices."

Rahman emphasized on importance of high-standard laboratory reports in assessing agricultural quality and sustainability, including soil health and nutrient content analysis. He called for direct relation between farmers and consumers to ensure transparency and fair pricing.

"Farmers should have direct access to market, which will not only increase their income but also ensure that consumers receive fresh produce at reasonable prices," he added.

He proposed that the Ministry of Agriculture convene to develop a comprehensive five-year plan focused solely on agriculture. "This plan should prioritize the cessation of imports of non-essential agricultural products that can be cultivated locally,"

Rahman urged, suggesting that the government should establish a timeline to phase out such imports. He noted that developed countries prioritize protection of their agricultural outputs, employing sustainable agricultural practices, and Bangladesh should adopt similar measures to safeguard its farmers.

Drawing from the latest World Bank reports, Rahman pointed out critical challenges that Bangladesh agriculture is facing, including soil degradation, pest management, and fluctuating market prices. He stressed that for a sustainable economy; there must be robust social and economic rules, with justice serving as the foundation to prevent market manipulation. "We need to create an equitable environment where farmers can thrive without the fear of being exploited," he said.

Rahman outlined essential strategies for increasing agricultural yields, including improved management of fertilizers, integrated pest management, and adoption of mechanized farming techniques. He said, "If implemented effectively, these strategies could potentially triple our current production targets." He stressed that significant private investment is crucial for realizing these advancements, particularly in integrating technology and artificial intelligence in precision agriculture.
