Dengue disease spreads in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Oct 19: The dengue menace is increasing in the district, creating a fearful situation among people.

In the city and surrounding areas, dengue-affected patients are increasing gradually. To treat increasing patients, a separate dengue ward has been opened in Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH). 

RMCH sources said, they started to admit dengue patients from August; compared to the last two months, the number of October has been several times.

Hospital authorities said, patients are coming from the outside of the city, mostly from neighbouring districts.

According to sources at Rajshahi Civil Surgeon (CS) office, the dengue infection number is increasing as aedes mosquitoes spread across villages.

According to RMCH sources, on an average, 20-25 dengue patients are admitted to the hospital daily; till Sunday (Oct 13), 379 dengue patients were admitted; and at present, 51 ones are being treated.

After being affected by dengue Advocate Shafiqul Haq Milon, former general secretary of Rajshahi Mahanagar BNP, is undergoing treatment in RMCH.
 
On Monday noon, he said, many people are coming to the hospital every day after being affected; considering symptoms, physicians are treating them.

Sources at the RMCH Emergency Department said, in the last few seasons, only Dhaka returnees were admitted mostly; but this season, locally affected people higher; and, the highest number of dengue patients- 156 were reported in Charghat Upazila.
Of the 389 patients admitted till October 13, 243 were affected in own areas.

According to a seven-day data of the RMCH, 25 dengue patients of Charghat were admitted while 15 ones are from Chapainawabganj District; in the last year, the highest dengue fatality was registered in Charghat Upazila.

After being affected recently, Ambia Begum, 60, of Kaluhati Village of the upazila took primary treatment at a local healthcare centre. But he was not curing. Later on, he was admitted to RMCH on October 9. She is still undergoing treatment.

Her son Manirul Islam said, many of them have been affected their village.

On October 6, 43 patients went to RMCH for treatment, followed by 56 on Oct 13. This time three died from dengue in Rajshahi District.

RMCH spokesperson Dr Shonkor Kumar Biswas confirmed the dengue-affected people are from local areas.

CS Dr Abu Sayed  Faruq said, in the last year, most of the dengue cases were registered from Charghat and Bagha upazilas; but this year, it has been the highest from Charghat.

"We have instructed centres for taking necessary measures for treatment of  dengue patients."

Dr Rozy Ara Khatun, assistant director of the Disease Control Department of the Rajshahi Divisional Health Directorate, said, "We are conducting publicity about controlling dengue. Citizens are being made aware about cleaning bushes beside living homes."

Each district health department has been instructed to take necessary steps to control the dengue menace, she added.
