Simmons named as Tigers' new head coach

The era of Chandika Hathurusingha as the head coach of the Bangladesh National Cricket Team has come to an end as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) suspended him and announced Caribbean cricket legend Phil Simmons as the new head coach of the Tigers.

"Before dismissing him, we issued a formal show-cause notice following the rules. He has been suspended for 48 hours, after which we will proceed with his dismissal," BCB president Faruque Ahmed said during a press conference at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

The BCB president explained that Hathurusingha's dismissal was primarily due to misconduct. "There were two or three incidents that were quite painful for me as a former player. Additionally, those set a poor example for the team," he added.

"When a coach or anyone loses their job due to misconduct, it's usually unnecessary to issue a formal notice. But since he is not just our coach but an international figure and this matter crosses national boundaries, we want to ensure that we follow both local and international regulations," Faruque clarified.

Hathurusingha was accused of physically assaulting national cricketer Nasum Ahmed during the ODI World Cup in India last year, an incident that played a significant role in his dismissal. In response to a question, Faruque said, "You can never physically harm a national team player. This is why he's facing these consequences now."

In addition to the misconduct allegations, Hathurusingha reportedly violated his contract by exceeding his leave entitlement.

While his contract allowed for 45 days of annual leave, he took an additional 67 days in the first year of his current term and 14 more days so far in the second year. Since these absences were not officially approved, the BCB considers this a breach of the code of conduct.

This was Hathurusingha's second tenure as Bangladesh's head coach. He initially served from May 2014 to October 2017, but resigned via email during the team's tour of South Africa. His second term began in 2023 and was supposed to run until 2025.

BCB president Faruque Ahmed also announced that Phil Simmons has been appointed as the interim head coach for 100 days. "We have decided to appoint him as an interim head coach for the tours of South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and the West Indies, as well as for the ICC Champions Trophy. Phil Simmons will serve as the interim head coach until the end of the Champions Trophy."

Simmons, a veteran of 169 international matches for the West Indies, played 26 Test matches and 143 ODIs. After his playing career, he transitioned into coaching and led the West Indies to victory in the T20 World Cup 2016. He has also coached teams like Papua New Guinea, Zimbabwe, Ireland and Afghanistan and was the head coach of the West Indies during the T20 World Cup 2021.
