Police arrested an Awami Swechchhasebak League (ASL) central leader from Mirpur area last night on charges of his alleged involvement in the killing of Md Ashraful Islam during the anti-discrimination student movement.
The arrestee is identified as Tarique Afzal Sabuj, a central leader of Swechchhasebak League.
Inspector (investigation) of Mirpur Model thana Md Sazzad Ramon confirmed the news, saying police conducted a raid on nearby area last night and arrested Awami Swechchhasebak League central leader, who is in the list of FIR.
He said a case was registered with Mirpur Model Thana on September 22 in connection with the murder of Md Ashraful Islam.
According to the FIR, on August 4, 2024, Ashraful Islam joined the anti-discrimination student movement at Mirpur-2 area, while leaders and workers of different organizations of Awami League fired indiscriminately on the protesters in order to stop the movement.
During the attacks, Md Ashraful Islam received severe wounds. Later, Ashraful was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead, it said.
Inspector of Mirpur Model Thana also said police arrested Tarique Afzal Sabuj after investigation and analyzing the CCTV footage.
He said that police also took support of the information technology during the investigation. —BSS
